A lot of land was granted to him by the Town of Hingham in 1665. He became a freeman in 1671, was an active magistrate and for many years Town Clerk of Hingham, and by the faithful discharge of the duties of this last office rendered invaluable service to the modern antiquary. From 1682, and for many years he kept a country store. Selectman in 1665 and for many years after. Also in the years 1680, 1682, and 1695 he was a delegate to the General Court.
A work has been published, styled Extracts from the Minutes of Daniel Cushing, of Hingham, with a photograph of his manuscript, etc. Boston — folio. Press of John Wilson & Son, 1865 ; printed by Lincoln. Henry Austin Whitney, of Boston, prepared an addition containing a list of names of persons from Hingham, Eng., and printed by Drake.
He left a full and minute will, dated 11 Sept., 1693, a copy of which may be found in the N.E. Hist. & Gen. Register, vol. XIV., p. 293.

From Deane’s History of Scituate:53
To Daniel Cushing, that town [Hingham] is indebted for the first accurate records of the proceedings of the town. His clerkship commenced in 1669, and the method and neatness of the records for many years, does him much credit.

From Lincoln’s History of Hingham:45
Daniel was an active business man, sagacious and thorough in whatever he undertook; a magistrate of more than ordinary ability; selectman 1665, and for many yrs. after; town clerk from 1669 until the time of his decease; delegate to the General Court in 1680, 1682, and 1695, and a man of influence and power in the community. It is to him more than to any of his contemporaries that the present generation is indebted for much of the valuable information which has come down to us relating to the early planters of this town. He accumulated a large property for the period in which he lived, and his will, dated 11 Sept. 1693, proved 18 Feb. 1700-1, covers sev. pages of MS., in the S.P. rec's. Resided on the paternal homestead, Main St., below ‘Pear Tree Hill.’

John was one of the first councellors under Prov. Chart. 1680, a judge, and speaker of the house.25

From Bell’s History of Exeter, page 351:311
John Gilman, the second son of Edward Gilman, Sr., born in England January 10, 1624, came to Exeter before 1650, and immediately became a prominent citizen. From the first he was concerned with his brother Edward in mills and lumber. After Edward was lost at sea in 1653, he inherited much of the latter’s property, and took his place in developing the resources of the town. He was chosen selectman more than one-half the years between 1650 and 1680; was repeatedly elected commissioner to end small causes; and appointed upon committees to care for the town’s interests. He had several handsome grants of land from the town, and a special right of a grist-mill. In the two years before New Hampshire was emancipated from the Massachusetts government he held the office of associate (judge) of the old Norfolk county court.
In 1680 Mr. Gilman was made a councillor of the newly erected province of New Hampshire, and in 1682 a judge of the Court of Pleas; but in 1683 he was by Governor Cranfield relieved of both offices. It is needless to say that his reputation in the province did not suffer by reason of his removal. In 1693 he was chosen by his townsmen a delegate to the Assembly, and was made Speaker of the House, and again chosen in 1697.
He married, June 30, 1657, Elizabeth, daughter of James Treworgy (from which came the popular Christian name of Trueworthy), and had six sons and ten daughters, and very numerous descendants. He built the “log house” opposite the Great bridge, which is still standing [as of 1888]. He died July 24, 1708.
On 30 Jun 1657 John married Elizabeth Trueworthy, daughter of James Trueworthy (ca 1595-) & Katherine Shapleigh (ca 1600-2 or 29 May 1676), in Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.311 Born 25 Feb 1638/9 in Kingsware, Devon. Elizabeth died in Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire on 8 Sep 1719.311
