Introduction

(This on-going project is not complete. The town maps have all been
scanned, but the names on the maps for most of the towns have not yet
been transcribed.)

The New Topographical Atlas of Saratoga County, New York, from Actual Surveys by S. N. & D. G. Beers and assistants, was published by Stone & Stewart, Philadelphia, in 1866. It includes detailed maps of the twenty towns of Saratoga County and more detailed maps of forty villages of the county. It also includes a table of distances and population tables.

The frontispiece, page 7, shows the Residence of James Carrigan, Northumberland, Saratoga Co., N.Y. and Jonesville Academy, Incorporated 1850, Hon. Roscius R. Kennedy, Resident and Sole Trustee. Rev. F. E. King, A.M., Principal. H.I. Tondy & Co. Luh. 503 & 505 Chestnut St. Phila.

Each map shows the locations of all the residences, business, schools, churches, and cemeteries, as well as streets, railroads, canals, rivers, and lakes.

So far, I have scanned the maps for the county, the towns, and the villages. For some of the maps, I have included a transcription of the names that appear on it, but I have more to do. There are various reasons to include such transcriptions. First, sometimes the words are not too easy to read on the scanned maps. Second, you can search the transcription of names, then find the name on the map. This search can be performed with the search feature on your web browser. Finally, as the web's search engines find these files, a web search will be able to find the names.

Map sizes

These maps take a fair amount of space, ranging up to a megabyte, so they are fairly slow to load over the internet. Please be patient.

County Maps

The Map of Saratoga County, on page 77 of the Atlas is available half-size, full-size, expanded size for each of the north and south halves of the county, and a colorized full-size map. It, of course, does not show buildings as the town and village maps do, but it has the other features, and you can see the relative positions of the towns.

Towns of Saratoga County

Each of the twenty towns in Saratoga has its own map. There are also inset maps for villages with post offices, listed in the next table. The populations of the towns according to the census of 1865 are listed on page 9 of the Atlas.
