A story I have written by my grandmother in 1976
THE SOURCE OF THE LINEN TOW THREAD: THIS THREAD IS 120 YEARS OLD
Crocheted into doilies by Clara Morrison Rhodes — from 1940 1974
Jabez Hitchcock Sr., and his wife came from Holland. His son, Vantile
Hitchcock, was my mother's grandfather. He had four daughters; Dorcas,
Hattie, Julia, and Macklin. His daughter Dorcas married Isaac Justice, a
Judge in Youngstown, Ohio. To this union was born Flora Justice Mancil and
my mother, Lilla Helen Justice Morrison.
When Jabez Hitchcock Sr. and his wife came from Holland they settled in
Pennsylvania. The raised flax, made their own thread, wove it into cloth,
from which they made their clothing — you could not buy manufactured clothing
in those days.
First they made the 'tow', then spun it into thread on the spinning wheel or
spindle; this was a two year process. In 1955 the process was shortened to
ten days. Then they wove it into cloth. The two I have, and the thread and
piece of cloth, was made by these people, my Great-Great Grandfather and
Grandmother. It was given by Grandpa Isaac Justice to sister Alizia,
mother's aunt, then to mother when she went back to Youngstown, Ohio, at the
time her father died in 1903. My mother had it thirty six years, then it was
given to me in 1939 when mother passed away.
Jabez Jr., brother of Vantile Hitchcock, was the father of George, Herman,
Wilber, Rebecca, Jane and Clara. Clara married Homer Warner, and became the
grandmother of my Aunt Clara, Aunt Nettie, Uncle Frank and Uncle Charley.
Grandpa Justice's second wife was their mother, and they were my mother's
half-sisters and brothers. She was the woman he married after the death of my
mother's mother, Dorcas, who died by falling down the cellar stairs, while
pregnant. Mother was seven years old at that time. John Justice, a cousin
of Jabez Jr.s children, married Nancy Sexton (Grandpa Justice's second wife
was a second cousin to his first wife) Nancy Sexton, daughter of Stephen
Sexton of Poland,Ohio. To this marriage was born Aunt Alizia and Isaac
Justice, who became my mother's father and my grandfather. Aunt Alizia
married John Thompson, she was the on who gave mother the linen thread, woven
cloth, and skein of 'Tow'.
Written by Clara Morrison Rhodes, daughter of Lilla Helen Justice and George
Morrison. Mother was the daughter of Isaac Justice, and Judge and Dorcas
Hitchcock Justice. Told to me by Aunt Clara Trusdail, half-sister of mother,
just before World War II when my husband, Miles Rhodes and I were in
Youngstown, Ohio on a visit.

Civil War Pension Records indicate George enlisted 6 June 1861 as a Corporal and was mustered out 13 July 1864.
On 21 July 1881, Salmon Hudron, Examining Surgeon, describes George's rheumatism:
"In my opinion the said Geo. M. Hitchcock is particularly incapacitated for obtaining his subsistence by manual labor from the cause above stated (rheumatism) . . . The disability is probably permanent. A more particular description of the applicant's condition is subjoined: Height, 6 ft.; weight, 170; complexion, tight; age, 54; pulse, 80; respiration, 18. The said Geo. M. Hitchcock has Rheumatism of the Peracardium, at times he is unable to perfrom manual labor. He was a good and faithful soldier during the late war, was in the service nearly four years and came home disabled. I find his disability to be one half total; viz four dollars per month."
On 24 March 1886, the Pension Board, J. T. Samfall, President, Geo. G. Peckham, Sec'y, and W. C. Bunce, Treas., find that George's health is too good and he does not deserve a pension. George gives the following statement:
"I was exposed tocold and wet weather sometime in 1864. Took cold and had Rheumatism. Iwas not in Hospt. for Ruemnatism or any other sickness. When I work hard I have pain in my left side in region of heart with palpitation and dizziness. Can't sleep at night. My sheart stops beating. I have shifting pains in my hips and knees. My Rheumatism has increased the past two or three years."
At this time, the examining physician finds him in the following condition:
"His pulse-rate is 80 per minute; his respiration is 22; his temperature 98; his height is 6 feet; he weighs 190 pounds, and states that he is 61 years of age. We find his tongue clear. Stomach, silver spleen, bowels and kidneys normal. Lungs mormal. Measurements 36 - 38. Heart normal. Muscular system well developed and nourished. No contractions of muscles or tendons. No structural changes or impeded motion of any joint. Measurements of all limbs and joints equal and mormal. General appearance indicates health and that he performs manual labor. We think him not entitled to rating for Rheumatism. Specific gravity of urine 1018, no sugar or albumon."
On 26 November 1886 George again describes how he contracted rheumatism in an attempt to keep his pension. "I was never treated in an army hospital while in the service. But was treated for
Rheumatism by our Regimental Surgeon. While we were at Harrson's Landing Virginia I had Rheumatism and was treated for it by our Regimental Surgeon. This was about the last of Aug. 1862. I can't give exact date now and afterward about Sept 5, 1862 at Georgetown Md. at the time our Regiment starts for Antietam I was too ill from Rheumatism to march with the Regt. and was treated by our Surgeon and excused from the march but rode with the ammunition train and joined my Co. at Antietam the morning of Sept. 16, 1862. Afterwards in June 1864 about the 15th or 20th I was again sick with Rhheumatism and was treated by our Surgeon and was excused from duty on that account but did not go to the hospital."
The Pension Board requested information from Wells W. Miller, Captain of Company H, 8th Regiment O.I.V., regarding where the company really was located on the dates George mentioned above. He disagrees with George's dates and says the company was in Alexandria, Virginia on June 30 and August 31st, 1862, and was at Harrison's Landing, Virginia on 31 July 1862.
On 17 December 1890 George is described as being 66 years old, 5 feet 11 and 3/4 inches tall, and weighing 168 pounds. He suffered from rhumatism, and an irregular heartbeat.
1891 Ohio Special census for Civil War Veterans lists George Hitchcock as living in Medina County. He was a Sergeant in Company H, 8th Ohio Infantry. He enlisted 26 June 1861 and was mustered out 13 July 1864. He served three years. There is no disability listed.
1900 Medina Township, Medina County, Ohio has George living alone. His middle initial is "M" and he is a widower. His age is 75, and he is working as a day laborer. However, he was unemployed for two months during the previous year. He was born in October. He no longer owns his own home, but now is a renter. (Sheet 10, Supervisor's District 16, Ennumeration District 49). This census has his birth place as Ohio, rather than New York. Both parents are born in CT.

HITCHCOCK. --At his home in Medina, June 23, Geo. Hitchcock, aged 77 years. Funeral, 1 p.m., June 26, at Medina; burial at Spring Grove.

OBITUARY
-----
Geo. Hitchcock
Geo. M. Hitchcock, veteran soldier of the Civil war and a well-known citizen of Medina, passed from life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ida Presley, June 23, 1901, after an illness of five months, the result of a paralytic stroke. He was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, June 24, his comrades of the G.A.R. laying him to rest.
Geo. Hitchcock was born in Vermont, 77 years ago, the child of Jabez and Lovinia Hitchcock.
The father was one of the pioneers of Medina Village, and helped to cut the trees of the virgin forest, where is now the public square, and helped build there the "log Episcopal Church." It was in the hard school of pioneer life that George spent his boyhood and youth, and he saw Medina Village in its beginnings and remained a Medina citizen all his life.
When the Civil war broke out, George HItchcock was one of the first in this town to volunteer in his country's behalf. He enlisted June 6, 1861, in the 8th O. V. I., -- that grand old regiment that received for so long a baptism of blood and fire. He entered the service as a corporal. He was mustered out July 13, 1864, and in all the intervening time of service he never missed a roll-call nor a fight. He was in the terrible battles of Winchester, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, at "the bloody angle" at Spottsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor and Petersburg: and no man ever said that he did not do his full duty as a soldier. His bravery and courage were unsurpassed: he rose to the heroic in battle: and even more than this, his great kind heart was as gentle and loving as a woman's in its tenderness displayed toward his brothers in arms; he was never too tired on the march to help some weaker comrade, never too thristy not to give a fainting brother the last drop in his canteen. He was man of mature years when he entered the service, and his comrades say that "the boys" came to rely on his judgment and look to him much as they would to a father.
After the close of the war, Geo. Hitchcock returned to Medina, where he led an industrious life and was known of many good qualities of heart and mind. Although he was unfortunate, yet it may be said of this grand old soldier and warm-hearted man, as was said of one of his heroes by John Hay:
"He never shirked and he never lied,
For I reckon he never knew how;
He weren't no saint, but at judgement
I'd run my chance with Jim
'Longside of some pious gentlemen
That wouldn't shook hands with him."
On 5 Nov 1846 George M. married Keziah Jane McComb(s), at Medina Co. Ohio. Born on 22 Apr 1825 at Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio. Keziah Jane died at Medina, Medina County, Ohio, on 8 Jul 1891.10 Buried in Methodist/Episcopal Church Cem., Medina.
From Keziah Jane Mc Combs' obituary below we see that she was raised by a man named Brewster. The following 1840 census may provide clues to the Brewster in question as Jane would be indicated by the female from 15-20.
The 1840 Sharon, Medina County, Ohio census (M704_412, page 192) shows Comfort Brewster with one male 20-30 and one 40-50. There is one female 15-10 and one 40-50.
However the 1830 Huntingont Township, Chittendon, Vermont (M19_186, page 294), census has Comfort Brewster with one male of ten and under 15, one of fifteen and under 20 and one of 30 and under 40. One female is five and under 10, and one is 30 and under 40. The female in the 1840 census could still be the one in the Vermont census who is five and under 10 and not Keziah Jane. For purposes of further research, the 1850 Sharon census is given below.
The 1850 Sharon Township, Medina County census (Roll M432_709, page 312) has Comfort Brewster, a farmer who is 58 years old. Marsha is 55 and Aheisa is 26.Value of real estate owned is $2600. All three were born in Vermont. Comfort's occupation is not that of minister as the is that of the Brewster mentioned in her obituary.
Census information indicates that Jane's mother was born in Pennsylvania and her father in Ohio.
Obituary, Medina County Gazette, 17 July 1891
Mrs. Jane Hitchcock
Mrs. Jane Hitchcock was born in Wooster, Ohio, April 22, 1825. In early life her home was with a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church, whose name was Brewster. She was married to George Hitchcock in 1848 and became the mother of three sons and four daughters, three of whom are deceased. Her husband and one son were members of the great Union army that saved the nation and its flag and in the hard fought battle of Rapadan, of which the writer personnally knows, the son was added to the slain and the death of this soldier boy crushed the mother's heart in all the years that followed.
Mrs. Hitchcock was a member of the Medina M. E. church and her old pastor, the Rev. B. J. Hoadley, assisted by Rector Harding, conducted the funeral of the deceased, and her body on Friday last was burried in the old cemetery of Medina. Her death took place on Wednesday, July 8, 1891.
Mrs. Hitchcock was greatly attached to her family and beautiful home, where tender ministration made the descent to the tomb an easy one. For years an invalid and sickness coupled with sorrow, kept her retired from society. All who knew her recognized her worth, and sympathized with her in her trials.
