"Black, William, Ovid. Enlisted in Company H, Eleventh Infantry, August 24, 1861, at Coldwater, for three years, age 18. Mustered August 28, 1961. Died of disease at Bardstown, Kentucky, February 9, 1862." Volume 11, page 11.14

Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War 1861-1865, first states, "Black, Alexander, Branch County. Enlisted in Co. B. First Infantry, July 10, 1861, at Coldwater, for three years, aged 19. Mustered July 22, 1861. Transferred to Company E. Wounded in action at Gaine's Mill, Virginia, June 27, 1862. Discharged for disability, resulting from wounds, at Washington, D. C., Jan. 23, 1863."15
Apparently he then reenlists in 1863: "Black, Alexander, Ovid. Enlisted in Co. K, Ninth Cavalry as Sergeant, April 1, 1863, at Coldwater, for three years, age 20. Mustered April 14, 1863. Killed in action at Stone Mountatin, Georgia, October 2, 1864. Buried in National Cemetery, Marietta, Georgia, Grave No. 6116."
Civil War Pension. Alexander's father, Phillip, applies for a pension in 1892 as the father of a Civil War soldier. Application number 548.804, Certificate number 469.776.
Cemetery Inscriptions and Records, 1837-1981, Volume 1a, compiled by the Branch County Genealogical Society, copied by Industrial Photocopy, Inc., Ft. Wayne, Indiana, 1982, lists Alexander as having been buried next to his wife in the Sorter Cemetery. It states he died 3 October 1864 and was 21 years, ten months and 12 days old.
Alexander married Elizabeth [Black]. Born in 1843. Elizabeth died at Branch Co., MI, on 5 Jun 1861.
Cemetery Inscriptions and Records, 1837-1981, Volume 1a, compiled by the Branch County Genealogical Society, copied by Industrial Photocopy, Inc., Ft. Wayne, Indiana, 1982, lists Elizabeth Black, wife of Alexander as being buried in the Sorter Cemetery in Branch County. She died 5 June 1861 and was 27 years 10 months and five days old.

40. Caroline Black. Born on 20 May 1848 at Ohio.7 Caroline died on 18 Aug 1923.7
Harvey DeBois and Caroline Black were married 12 May 1870 at Reading, Hillsdale Co., MI, by Aaron D. Abbott, Justice of the Peace. At he time they both resided at Ovid, Branch County, and it was the first marriage for both of them. They had seven children, four of whom were living in 1904. After his death, Caroline resided at McLeans, Newaygo County.16
On 12 May 1870 Caroline married Harvey DeBois, at Reading, Hillsdale Co., MI.16 Born ca 1844 at Lockport, NY.16 Harvey died at Bridgeton, Newaygo Co., MI, on 19 Sep 1904.16 Occupation: farmer.
In 1861 Harvey moved from Wellsville, NY, to Algausee, Branch Co., MI. He enlisted 4 Jan 1864 , mustered in at Kalamazoo in the 11th Michigan Voluntary Inf., and was honorably discharged 15 Sep 1865, mustered out at Jackson City, Michigan. After the war he resided in Branch and Newaygo Counties, and in Newaygo at Bridgeton.16

Newaygo County marriage records state Wesley married Alice Bell Echtinan on 4 August 1881 in Brooks Township. He was 28, born in Michigan and a baker. She was 16 and born in Michigan. William Glanvill, J.P. married them with Andrew and Lucena Echtinan as witnesses. Book 4, #1220, page 83.
1884 Garfield Township, Newaygo County, Michigan census indicates Wesley S. was 30, Alice was 18, William was one, and Otto was four months old. Otto was born in November, 1883. All were born in Michigan. Wesley's father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Ohio. Alice's father was born in Pennsylvania and the birthplace of her mother is not known. Both Wesley and Alice have lived in Michigan all of their lives. Wesley is a farmer.
1900 Garfield Township, Newaygo County, Michigan census reports that Wesley was born in January 1854, William in October 1882, Roy in June 1886, Verna in June 1889, Leilly in May 1890, and Mabel in June 1892. All of them were born Michigan. Wesley's father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Ohio. Wesley is a farmer. None of the children have attended school.

At the box social held in the Ward school there were enough present to fill the building. The boxes sold at prices ranging from $.15 to $1.04. The total received was $5.33. Several from town were present and the patrons of the school together with the children made up a jolly company.
Recitations were given by Dora Aiken, Daniel Aiken, Budy Aiken, Archy Munday, and Mr. Mays. Mr. Wesley black helped entertain by planying his guitar, and singing. Mr. Jacob Aiken also spoke.
Newaygo County Marriage records have Wesley marrying Celesta Quant on 7 April 1903 in Bridgeton. He is 51, resides in Garfield Township, was born in Branch County, Michigan and is a farmer. She is 45, a resident of Newaygo, was born in St. Clair County, Michigan and is a housekeeper. His parents are Phillip Black and Sarah Ann Croy, hers are Joshua Tenny and Mary Ann Gee. Both have been married once. Book 4, # 2522, page 173.

Newaygo County Marriage records indicate Wesley married Ada B. Towsley on 29 December 1909 at Coldwater Lake. He is 57, a resident of Garfield Township, was born in Michigan and is a farmer. She is 43, a resident of Branch County, was born in Michigan, and is a domestic. His parents are Phillip Black and Sarah Croy, and hers are Luther Towsley and L:ydia Echtinan. He has been married twice. She has never been married. L. N. Cottrell was the minister, and Anrey and Bertha Sanders were witnesses. Book 4, # 645, page 246.
On 4 Aug 1881 Wesley Arontus first married Alice Bell Echtinaw, at Brooks Township, Newaygo County, MI.7 Born ca 1866 at Michigan. Alice Bell died at Garfield Township, Newaygo Co. MI, on 4 Aug 1896.
Newaygo County Death records indicate Alice died 4 August 1896 in Garfield Township. She was a housewife and 30 years of age. She died of consumption. Her parents were Andrew Echtinan and Lucinia. Book 2, page 144, #2761.

Newaygo County Death Records indicate Myron died of a cerebral hemmorhage, on 28 December 1927 in Newaygo Village. He was 72 years nine months and 23 days old. He was born in Ohio, and a retired farmer. His father was Phillip Black and his mother was unknown. Book 3, page 181.
On 15 Feb 1884 Myron Sylvester married Minnie Lloyd (129) , daughter of Andrew Carpenter Lloyd (1833-18 May 1904) & Elizabeth Mattie Grubaugh (32) (6 Jul 1843-26 Oct 1919), at Newaygo, Brooks Township, Newaygo Cty, MI. Born on 19 Jan 1866.
Newaygo County marriage records indicate Myron S. Black, 27, of Garfield Township married Minnie Loyd, 18, of Garfield Township on 15 February 1884 in Newaygo Village. He was a farmer who was born in Ovid, Branch County, MI. She was born in Ohio. The minister was A. J. Van Wyck, with witnesses Laura Loyd and Claron J. Stone. Book 4, # 1569, page 107.
1884 Garfield Township, Newaygo County, Michigan census indicates Minnie and Myron were married in Newaygo, in February, 1884. Myron is 27 and Minnie is 18. He was born in Michigan, his father in Pennsylvania and his mother in Ohio. Minnie was born in Ohio and her parents in Pennsylvania. Myron is a farmer and Minnie is at home. The number of years lived in Michigan is incorrect; he is supposed to have lived here three years and she 28. They are living with his father, Phillip, and her mother Elizabeth Loyd.
1 March 1900, "Local and General News," Newaygo Republican:
"A jolly crowd invaded the pleasant home of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Black of Garfield township, to assist in celebrating his 45th birthday. Although the winds howled without, and snow blew amounting to a blizzard of respectable proportions, brightness reigned within, diversified with music and social converse. When supper was announced, to which a goodly number responded, giving testimony to the happy occasion. After which the happy crowd dispersed, feeling that it was good to have been there."
1900 Garfield Township, Newaygo County, Michigan census has Myron born in January 1855, Minnie was born in January1866, and their servant, George Bailey, was born in May 1888. George and his parents were all born in Michigan. Myron was born in Michigan, his father in Pennsylvania and his mother in Ohio. Minnie was born in Ohio and her parents in Pennsylvania. Minnie and Myron have been married for 16 years. Minnie has never had children. They own their own farm without a mortgage.
