She was three years old when her father died. She was the youngest and the older boys were gone. Hattie's mother wove rugs to make money.

Hattie lived at 105 Kalamo Street in Olivet with her daughter Helen, 16.They did not live on a farm and their home was worth $1800. Hattie was 55 and a widow. Helen attended school, and there was no occupation listed for Hattie.
Hattie lived in the home were Thomas Prosser wooed Lur Beecher for so many years.25

Francis Welch, Ralph’s grandmother, was 74 and born in Novemeber 1825 and is a widow. Francis and both of her parents were born in New York. Ralph, both of his parents, Mattie and Harold were all born in Michigan. Mattie’s father was born in New York and her mother in Ohio. Mattie has only had one child. In 1944, Clhyde and Flo lived in a home on Main Street previously occupied by the Benjamin and Hannah Follett family from Connecticut. This house had the first door bell in Olivet. While Clyde and Flo were on vacation, Theral Herrick occupied the house.25
Clyde worked with his brother Frank in the meat business from 1902 to 1910.25
Clyde purchased a barber business from Charley Montague in 1910. It continued through 1920.25
For many years a shave was ten cents, a haircut was twenty-five cents, and a massage was ten cents. World War I put Clyde out of the barber business. During retirement, Clyde barbered for the long-time local barber, Henry Colestock, when there were busy periods.26
Clyde started a dry goods and men’s furnishings business in the former Storr Building during 1920. This business was moved to the old Blanchard building next to the Olivet State Bank in 1938 where it was known at the “Herrick’s Community Shoppe.”25
The Shoppe was sold to a man named Vodelreuters from Marshall, Michigan in 1954.26
The store’s first location in 1920 was next to the College Inn, until it was moved in 1938.26
On 16 Feb 1906 when Clyde Melvin was 22, he married Flora (Flo) Campbell in Olivet, Eaton Co., MI. Born on 28 Jun 1882 in Olivet, Eaton Co., MI. Flora (Flo) died in Battle Creek, MI, on 24 Aug 1983; she was 101.
Flo washed towels for Clyde’s barber business every day.26
