405. King Edward the Elder of England. Born in 871/2 in Wessex, England. Edward the Elder died on 17 Jul 924 in Farndon on Dee, Chester. Buried in Winchester.

Edward, king of the West Saxons from 899 to 924, conquered most of the areas of England which had been under control of the Danes. He succeeded his father Alfred the Great after Alfred’s death in Oct 899, and took control of Mercia upon his sister’s death.

Edward the Elder first married Ecgwynn.

Ecgwyn, also spelled Egwina.

Edward the Elder second married Ælflæd of Wessex (486) , daughter of Earl Æthelhelm of Wiltshire (404) (ca 859-ca 898) & Æthelglyth of Mercia (637). Born ca 878 in Wessex. Ælflæd died ca 919.

408. Æthelflaed of Mercia. Born ca 869 in Wessex. Æthelflaed died on 12 Jun 918 in St. Peters, Gloucestershire.

Aethelflaed,

also spelled ETHELFLEDA, or AELFLED, also called LADY OF THEMERCIANS (d. June 12, 918, Tamworth, Eng.), Anglo-Saxon ruler ofMercia in England.

The daughter of King Alfred the Great, she helped her brotherEdward the Elder, king of the West Saxons (reigned 899-924), inconquering the Danish armies occupying eastern England.Aethelflaed became the effective ruler of Mercia some yearsbefore the death (911) of her husband, Aethelred, ealdorman ofthe Mercians. While Edward fortified (910-916) the southeastMidlands, Aethelflaed was building fortresses around Mercia. By917 she and Edward were ready to launch a massive joint assaulton the Danish positions. Aethelflaed quickly captured Derby, andin 918 she occupied Leicester, but she died before the campaignwas successfully completed. Edward then claimed his sister'skingdom and completed the subjugation of the Danes. BecauseAethelflaed had extended her influence into Wales andNorthumbria, Edward was able to assert his authority over theseregions as well. Thus, almost all of England came under hiscontrol.
