Family of Richard Pomeroy (554) & Eleanor Coker

1918. Eltweed Pomeroy. Born ca 1585 in Beaminster, Dorset. Eltweed was baptized in Beaminster, Dorset, on 4 Jul 1585.5 Eltweed died in Mar 1673 in Northampton, MA.2 Occupation: armorer and gunsmith.

Eltweed came to America with his second wife Margery and his son Eldad on the ship Mary & John, Captain Squibb (but see below). He settled in Dorchester, admitted a freeman 4 Mar 1632, one of the proprietors and founders of Dorchester and presided at the first town meeting being first Selectman, appointed constable of Dorchester 1634. In 1636-37 he emigrated with Rev. John Warham’s congregation to Windsor, CT. His house and lot there were within the Palisado. He had a grand f land in 1638; sold land to Thomas Newell in 1641 and later gave land to his sons Caleb and Joseph. In 1671 he removed to Northampton, MA, to live with his son Medad.39

Eltweed was in Dorchester, MA, by 1630, probably in the Mary & John; freeman 4 Mar 1633; removed to Windsor, CT, about 1636. After his second marriage he removed to Northampton with his son Medad.2 Land was granted to Eltweed in Windsor in 1638.93

Eltweed died at the home of his son, Medad, in Northampton. Tradition asserts that he became blind.94

The frequent claims that (1) Eltweed was a passenger on the Mary & John, and (2) his son Eldad was baptised in Feb 1629/30 are suspect.5

On 4 May 1617 Eltweed first married Johana Keech, daughter of John Keech, in Beaminster, Dorset, Eng.94 Born ca 1586 in Beaminster, Dorsetshire. Johana was baptized in Beaminster, Dorsetshire, on 15 May 1586.5 Johana died in Nov 1620. Buried on 27 Nov 1620 in Beaminster, Dorsetshire.94
