2194. John Turner Sr. Born ca 1621 in Terling, Essex. John was baptized in Terling, Essex, on 24 Mar 1621.107 John died aft 20 May 1697 in Scituate, MA.

John settled 30 rods north-west of Union bridge, where he erected a tannery. Twenty acres were laid out for John, east of Barstow’s hill and adjoining the third Herring boork; his son Isaac lived on this land.6 He held numerous town offices, and with his younger brotgher, John Turner, known as John, Jr., served on many committees for division of common lands, and on those chosen to carry out various actions of the town. The brothers were often serving together on juries at the Plymouth Court, as well as upon inquests. John,m Sr., served in the campaign against the Narragansetts with his brother, Joseph Turner.7

On 12 Nov 1645 John married Mary Brewster (6533) , daughter of Elder Jonathan Brewster (2964) (12 Aug 1593-7 Aug 1659) & Lucretia Oldham (1816) (ca Jan 1600-4 Mar 1678/9), in Scituate, MA.3 Born on 16 Apr 1627 in Plymouth, MA.207 Mary died aft 23 Mar 1698 in Scituate, MA.135

"Young son John (so named probably at request of a godfather) lived north-east of Hick's swamp, (near now [1831] Leonard Clap's)."6

“Although an active man he was not physically strong, and was freed from military duty or training. He was active in town affairs on various committees with his elder brogher, John, Sr.; ws one of the local Council of War, and a colonial collector of the excise on ‘tarr, borads and oysters.’ He lived northeast of Hick’s Swamp, on the Country Way, near the old Clap mansion-house at Greenbush.”7

John’s will, dated 25 Oct 1686, proved 8 Jun 1687, mentions sons Japheth and Israel (executors), Jacob, David, and Philip, and daughters Miriam Turner, Anne Green, and Sarah Turner. Wit: Thomas Turner, Thomas Plamer Sr, and Thomas Palmer Jr.75

On 25 Apr 1649 John "young son" married Anne James (1561) , daughter of Philip James (486) (1600-1605-aft 10 Aug 1638) & Jane [James] (ca 1606-22 Feb 1688/9), in Scituate, MA.116 Born ca 1629.75 Anne died bef 1687. (Anne was not mentioned in her husband’s will).

"Thomas lived near the Harbour (probably on the Kent street lot)."6

He succeeded his father at the tannery south of Colman Hills, but lived on Kent Street on the lot laid out in 1633, the fourth lot from the corner of Kent Street and First Parish Road.7

On 6 Jan 1651/2 Thomas married Sarah Hyland (5612) , daughter of Thomas Hyland (1533) (ca 1604-1683) & Deborah [Hyland], in Scituate, MA.3 Born ca 1634 in England. Sarah was baptized in Tenterden, Kent, Eng., on 9 Mar 1634.7 Sarah died in Nov 1688 in Scituate, MA.116

On 15 Aug 1649 Lydia married James Doughty in Scituate, MA.116 Born ca 1624.

James was early in Scituate. He ws a soldier in Philip’s war, and 1678, was paid by the Town for nine weeks’ campaign in 1676.6

On 13 Nov 1651 Mary married William Parker in Scituate, MA.85 William died ca 1684 in Scituate, MA.2

“William Parker was a freeman 1640. He had sixty acres of land north of Edward Foster’s North river lot. His house stood in Parker lane, west of the small brook.”6

2199. Joseph Turner. Born ca 1636/7 in Scituate, MA. Joseph was baptized in First Parish Church, Scituate, on 1 Jan 1636/7.116 Joseph died on 1 Nov 1715 in Scituate, MA.116

Joseph was “called by Pratt ‘a scapegoat and ne’er-do-well’ in his younger years; retrieved his reputation by his services in King Philip’s War, in which he was an Ensign. He was severely wounded in the expedition against the Narragansetts in 1673. On his return to Scituate the twon ‘chose Serj. John Damon to go with Joseph Turner and procure a cure for him; also to support him at the town’s expense so lon as he liveth.’ He recovered, and rejoined the troops under Governor Winslow, and was at the stroming of the Narragansett fort 19 Dec 1675. In 1681 Joseph Turner, having served in the Narragansett fight, is freed from military duty. He was unmarried.”7

2200. Nathaniel Turner. Born ca 1638/9 in Scituate, MA. Nathaniel was baptized in Scituate, MA, on 10 Mar 1638/9.116 Nathaniel died on 31 Jan 1715 in Scituate, MA.116

Nathaniel lived on the paternal farm, east of Colman’s hill.6 “Nine generations of his descendants have lived upon this farm. The house now (1936) standing on the property is on the opposite side of the way from teh side of the original house and tannery. It is called the ‘Samuel Turner house,’ and is owned by the Scituate Sand and Gravel Company, who used it as a clubhouse for its employees for a few years.”7

On 29 Mar 1664/5 Nathaniel first married Mehitable Rigby, daughter of John Rigby (ca 1615-) & Isabel [Rigby] (-21 Jun 1673), in Scituate, MA.85 Born ca 1643 in Dorchester, MA. Mehitable was baptized in Dorchester, MA, on 2 Mar 1643. Mehitable died on 22 Mar 1680 in Scituate, MA.116
