3667. Elizabeth Cook. Born in 1653 in Portsmouth, RI.66 Elizabeth died in Aug 1716 in Little Compton, MA (now RI).224 She died of smallpox. Buried in Briggs Cem., Shaw Road.57

ca 1680 Elizabeth married William Briggs (2991) , son of John Briggs (813) (1609-Nov 1690) & Sarah Cornell (1038) (-ca 1661).268 Born in 1650 in Portsmouth, RI.66 William died on 12 May 1716 in Little Compton, MA (now RI).66 Buried in Briggs Cem., Shaw Road.57 “Here lyeth the body of William Briggs Sr, who dyed May 1716 in the 66th year of his age. Here lyeth the body of Elizabeth, wife of William Briggs who dyed in August 1716 in ye 63rd year of her age”.

They lived in the Briggs place, now [1967] the Coombs place on Shaw Road, and a part of this place is now Briggs beach.57

Will: His will, made 03Apr1716, and proved July 1716: "That a line be run from the end of wall that runs to ye
marsh and to son William, all land north side of line. To son Job, all land south of line, all of which is bordered
by the sea. To son Job my dwelling house, all out-housing and farm I now live on. To son William the house
where he now dwells with orchard. To daughter Susannah Dennis house with land now held by Thomas Waite.
To Deborah Head all land east side of Cole Brook. To daughter Elizabeth Woodman 100 pounds. To daughter
Deborah Head 20 pounds. To son William 60 pounds. That my two mulatto girls, Hope and Mercy be with my
wife or daughters, Woodman and Head, until age 25 and then freed. That my servant lad Jeremiah Springer
live with my wife till age 21. Robert Dennis, John Woodman, and Benjamin Head be overseers...". Inventory of
William Briggs taken 17May1716: His sword, homestead farm, and housing in Little Compton, 600 pounds;
Land and housing in Tiverton, 100 pounds; Total inventory, 3043- 5 shillings.

John resided in Portsmouth and Tiverton. His will, proved 7 Aug 1737, mentions wife Ruth, sons John and Thomas Shaw, daughters Deborah Howland and Mary Howland, Ruth Fish and Ann Tripp.57

ca 1680 John married Ruth Shaw, daughter of Anthony Shaw (ca 1628-21 Aug 1705) & Alice Stonard (ca 1633-ca 1705). Born on 10 Oct 1660 in Little Compton, MA (now RI). Ruth died aft 1737.

3671. Hannah Cook. Born ca 1660 in Portsmouth, RI. Hannah died on 22 Oct 1736 in Portsmouth, RI.

Although Abigail and Sarah are listed as children of Enoch and Hannah (Cook) (Wilcox) Briggs in the Portsmouth, RI, vital records,269 only Susannah is listed with a birth date. The marriage date of 1799 for Enoch and Hannah conflicts with Susannah’s birth date of 1797 and with Abigail’s first marriage to John Moon in 1710. Perhaps they were actually married about 1790.

ca 1679 Hannah first married Daniel Wilcox, son of Daniel Wilcox (ca 1632-2 Jul 1707). Born ca 1656.

On 2 Mar 1699/1700 [?] Hannah second married Enoch Briggs (2992) , son of John Briggs (813) (1609-Nov 1690) & Sarah Cornell (1038) (-ca 1661), in Portsmouth, RI.269 Enock Briggs and Hannah Wilcocks, widow of Daniel, were married by Joseph Sheffield, Asst., 2 Mar 1699/1700. Born ca 1650/1660 in Portsmouth, RI. Enoch died in 1734 in Portsmouth, RI.66

Enoch’s will was proven in 1736. It mentions his wife Hannah and three daughters. His wife was executrix.

Joseph resided in Portsmouth. His will, dated 25 Apr 1742 and proved 27 Mar 1746, “Son Thomas executor; to son WIlliam land in Portsmouth; to daughter Deborah Sisson land in Portsmouth; to William and grandson Constant Briggs, son of Joseph, certain land in Tiverton. Constant to pay his sister mary 20 pounds and to sister Rachel 25 pounds; to son Thomas land already given by deed; to grandson John, son of JOhn, all my housing and lands in Portsmouth given to me by my honored father John Cook last will and testament; to grandson John a chest which was his great grandfather’s; to daughter Diborah Sisson 1 iron pot and 2 silver spoons; to granddaughter mary, the daughter of Deborah Sisson, a brass skillet, to son Thomas all my neat cattle, feather bed and Negro man Abraham; to son William a cow, old mare, long table and the least silver cup, etc.; to cach grandson named Joseph in the first line two shillings; to sons Thomas and William and daughter Deborah the rest of the silver money; to grandson David cook my silver buttons for breeches; to granddaughter Susannah, daughter of William, a silver spoon, to sons Thomas and william my wearing apparel; to sister-in-law Mary Briggs thirty pounds and a cow; to cousin Sarah Durfee, daughter of Thomas Durfee now of Bristol 5 pounds at 18; to daughter Deborah next biggest silver cup...”57

On 19 Apr 1692 Joseph married Susannah Briggs (10097) , daughter of John Briggs (2988) (1642-2 Jul 1713) & Hannah Fisher (ca 1642-aft 1727), in Portsmouth, RI.269 Joseph Cook of Rhode Island and Susanna Briggs of Tiverton were married by Joseph Church, Justice, 19 Apr 1692. Born in Mar 1672 in Dartmouth, MA.

On 12 Jul 1688 Deborah married William Almy (10082) , son of Christopher Almy (1632-30 Jan 1713) & Elizabeth Cornell (2982) (ca 1637-aft 1708). Born on 27 Oct 1665 in Portsmouth, RI. William died in Tiverton, RI, on 6 Jul 1747; he was 81. Occupation: yeoman.

Will of William Almy, of Tiverton, yeoman, in declining years, dated 29 Apr 1747, proved 3 Aug 1747. Mentions wife Hope Almy who received all furniture she brought with her when I married her; sons Jobe Almy, John Almy deceased, Samuel Almy, and William Almy; daughters Elizabeth Almy deceased leaving son Jobe and Rebecckah Slocum; grandsons John Almy deceased and Benjamin Almy sons of son John Almy deceased; granddaughters Anstanced Sayer and mary Greene daughters of son John Almy deceased; children of grandson John Almy who was the son of John Almy deceased, namely Elisha Almy and ___ Almy both under 21; grandson Wiulliam Almy under 21 son of son Samuel Almy; granddaughter Amy Ellet; grandson Jobe Almy son of daughter Elizabeth Almy deceased; and cousin Deborah Cook.137

3675. Martha Cook. Born ca 1668 in Portsmouth, RI. Martha died ca 1704 in Portsmouth, RI.

The dates of birth of Martha and William’s children are not known, except Michael’s whose birth date was recorded at Portsmouth. The order is also unknown, but the order of the sons Michael, William, and Thomas is given in their father’s will, as was the order of the daughters Patience, Mary, Amy, and Sarah.

Martha married William Cory (12888) , son of William Cory (ca 1634-8 Feb 1681/2) & Mary Earle (4210) (ca 1640-22 Mar 1718). Born ca 1659 in Portsmouth, RI. William died on 14 May 1704 in Portsmouth, RI.

William was admitted freeman in 1664. He served on a grand jury in 1687. On 2 Jul 1695 he was appointed by the Assembly on a comittee to propose a method of making a tax rate. He was a deputy 1695-96.

Will of William Cory of Portsmouth, dated 14 May 1704, proved 4 Jun 1704, mentions father William Cory late of Portsmouth deceased; unnamed mother one of the executors; sons Michael Corey under 21, William Corey second son under 21, Thomas Corey third son; four daughters Patience Cory, Mary Corey, Amey Corey, and Sarah Corey all under 18 and unmarred; brother-in-law Joseph Cook; and friend Benjamin Hall.137

David Clayton was granded a lnad patent Oct 1691 with John, and moved to Monmouth County about 1700.
