3936. Peter Cushing. Born on 29 Mar 1646 in Hingham, MA.33 Peter died in Hingham, MA, on 14 Apr 1719; he was 73.33

In 1679 Peter’s father Daniel, built for Peter the house near the Cohasset line, in that part of Hingham known as Rocky Nook, which has been occupied by five generations of Peter’s descendants. When the house was built there was no road going by it, the only way leading to it was Turkey Hill Lane, a path leading from the “Plain” to Cohasset.7

Peter and Hannah “resided on East St., Hingham. He was constable 1688, and selectman 1689 and 1702. There is an old house on East St., still [1905] owned by the descendants of Peter Cushing which was built in 1670; it is shaded by a fine old elm tree, transplanted in 1729. This part of East St. is often called ‘Rocky Nook.’”48

On 4 Jun 1685 when Peter was 39, he married Hannah Hawke (1393) , daughter of Matthew Hawke (458) (1610-11 Dec 1684) & Margaret [Hawke] (-18 Mar 1684), in Hingham, MA.33 Born ca 1655 in Hingham, MA. Hannah was baptized in Hingham, MA, on 22 Jul 1655.33 Hannah died on 4 Apr 1737 in Hingham, MA.33

Daniel and Elizabeth resided in Hingham on Main St., below Pear Tree Hill. He was constable 1684,48 and freeman 1679.2

On 8 Dec 1680 when Daniel was 32, he married Elizabeth Thaxter (13744) , daughter of Lieut. John Thaxter (1626-14 Mar 1686/7) & Elizabeth Jacob (4769) (ca 1634-24 Nov 1725), in Hingham, MA.33 Born on 19 Feb 1660/1 in Hingham, MA.33 Elizabeth died on 6 Apr 1727; she was 66.48

3938. Deborah Cushing. Born on 13 Nov 1651 in Hingham, MA.33 Deborah died in Medford, MA, on 15 Jan 1710; she was 58.48

On 25 Sep 1679 when Deborah was 27, she first married Henry Tarleton in Hingham, MA.33 Henry died bef Aug 1686.

On 31 Aug 1686 when Deborah was 34, she second married Rev. Benjamin Woodbridge (12795) , son of Rev. John Woodbridge (6626) (1613-17 Mar 1695) & Mercy Dudley (4195) (27 Sep 1621-1 Jul 1691), in Hingham, MA.33 Born in Jun 1645. Benjamin died on 15 Jan 1709/10 in Medford, MA.

3939. Rev. Jeremiah Cushing. Born on 3 Jul 1654 in Hingham, MA.33 At the age of <1, Jeremiah was baptized on 9 Jul 1654.2 Jeremiah died in Scituate, MA, on 22 Mar 170[5/]6; he was 51.116 Buried in First Parish Cem., Scituate Harbor. Education: Harvard 1676.

Jeremiah preached at Haverhill, then ordained at Scituate 27 May 1691.2

Jeremiah "received his degree at Harvard College in 1676. He was educated for the ministry under the direction of Mr. Norton of Hingham. He was not immediately in the ministry. He received an invitation to become the pastor of Haverhill in 1682, which he declined. He began to preach in Scituate in February 1691, and was ordained there on the 27th of May the same year. His salary was £60. Besides this, the Conihassett partners made him a gift of twenty acres of land. It was laid out in 1694, adjoining the lands of John Curtis and Henry Merritt. He purchased John Curtis's house in 1698, and probably resided in it, and rented the parsonage. It stood between Timothy White's and the harbour.

"The term of Mr Cushing's ministry was short, he having deceased March 22, 1705, in the fifty-first year of his age and the fourteenth of his ministry. There is a monument ot his memory in the old burying ground near the harbour. He suffered a lingering illness, ahving been obliged to suspend his labours for several months."6

Jeremiah was also a minister at Provincetown, for several years before 1700, but probably only preached to the transient population in the fishing season.48

On 5 Jun 1685 when Jeremiah was 30, he married Hannah Loring (6141) , daughter of Thomas Loring (1675) (ca 1625-1678/9) & Hannah Jacob (4771) (ca 1639-8 Oct 1720), in Hingham, MA.33 Born on 9 Aug 1664 in Hull, MA.33 At the age of <1, Hannah was baptized in Hingham, MA, on 2 Apr 1665.33 Hannah died in Scituate, MA, on 30 May 1710; she was 45.116 Buried in First Parish Cemetery, Scituate.

Hannah first maried Jeremiah Cushing, second John Barker. Jeremiah and Hannah were second cousins. His maternal grandfathter and her maternal grandmother were siblings.

The Loring family Bible, printed in London in 1599 and brought from England by Thomas Loring, descended in the family of his granddaughter Hannah (Loring) Cushing.83

3940. Capt. Theophilus Cushing. Born on 19 May 1657 in Hingham, MA.2 At the age of <1, Theophilus was baptized on 7 Jun 1657.2 Theophilus died in Hingham, MA, on 7 Jan 1717/8; he was 60.33 Occupation: farmer.

Theophilus purchased from his aunt, widow of Mathias Briggs, the latter’s homestead near Pear Tree Hill.7

Theophilus and Mary resided on Main St., South Hingham. He was selectman 1697, 1707, and 1715, and representative 1702-04, 1707 and 17333.

Will: The will of Theophilus Cushing, dated 3 Jan 1717/18, gives 'to wife Mary, thirty-two shares in the second part of 3d division in Cohasset; also land at 'Planters' Hill;' my quick stock, all my movables, and the improvement of my whole estate while she remains a widow; afterwards to go to sons Theophilus and Seth when they become of age. To daughter Deborah £100; to son Nehemiah land in Abington, and the release of a bond for money lent him; to son Adam land and buildings formerly purchased of William Sprague, sen r.; to son David land purchased of Samuel Stodder, also the lot purchased of my brother Samuel Thaxter; to son Abel house and land I purchased of William Sprague, Jr., lying near 'Page's Bridge;' to son Theophilus my dwelling-house, barn, and land on the west side of the road, and land at 'Wakely's Marsh;' to son Seth land and other valuables; and the sons are to pay £100 each to their sister Deborah;' w. Mary executrix.

On 28 Nov 1688 when Theophilus was 31, he married Mary Thaxter (13747) , daughter of Lieut. John Thaxter (1626-14 Mar 1686/7) & Elizabeth Jacob (4769) (ca 1634-24 Nov 1725), in Hingham, MA.33 Born on 19 Aug 1667 in Hingham, MA.33 Mary died in 1737.48

Matthew and Jael “resided in the ancestral homestead, Main St., below Pear Tree Hill. He was known as ‘Lieutenant,’ and later as ‘Captain.’ Constable 1693, and selectman in 1710.”48
