3942. Hon. John Cushing. Born on 28 Apr 1662 in Scituate, MA.3 John died in Scituate, MA, on 19 Jan 1738; he was 75.116

“John resided in Scituate, Mass. He was a deputy to the General Court in 1692; Chief Justice of the Inferior Court of Plymouth, from 1702 to 1710; representative member for Massachusetts of the Governor’s Council, from 1708 to 1728; and Judge of His Majesty’s Superior Court of Judicature of Massachusetts from 1728 to his death in 1737. The Superior Court of Massachusetts, from its foundation in 1692 until its overthrow by the Revolution, had 33 Justices, the Bench consisting of five members. Among these were John Cushing 1728, his son John Cushing Jr., and his grandson William Cushing. Rev. Josiah Cotton of Plymouth says of him: ‘He was a gentleman well versed in law, the life and soul of our Court while he continued in it, a man in the main of justice and integrity.’ In 1723 he was Lieut. Col. of the Plymouth Regiment, which at that time probably embraced all the local militia of the County.”48

On 20 May 1688 when John was 26, he first married Deborah Loring (6143) , daughter of Thomas Loring (1675) (ca 1625-1678/9) & Hannah Jacob (4771) (ca 1639-8 Oct 1720), in Scituate, MA.116 Born on 15 Mar 1668 in Hull, MA.33 At the age of 1, Deborah was baptized in Hingham, MA, on 24 Oct 1669.33 Deborah died in Scituate, MA, on 9 Jun 1713; she was 45.116

3943. Thomas Cushing. Born on 26 Dec 1663 in Scituate, MA.3 At the age of <1, Thomas was baptized on 3 Apr 1664.48 Thomas died in Boston, MA, on 3 Oct 1740; he was 76.48

Thomas lived in Boston. In 1690 he was admitted to the Second Church there. He was Ensign in 1691, and a member in 1709 of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company; Selectman of Boston in 1723, and representative of the King’s State Council from 1724 to 1725. In 1725, he was one of the opponents of the explanatory Charter of King George I.48

On 17 Oct 1687 when Thomas was 23, he first married Deborah Thaxter (13748) , daughter of Lieut. John Thaxter (1626-14 Mar 1686/7) & Elizabeth Jacob (4769) (ca 1634-24 Nov 1725).33 Born on 14 Sep 1669 in Hingham, MA.33 Deborah died on 16 Feb 1712; she was 42.2

On 8 Dec 1712 when Thomas was 48, he second married Mercy Wensley (25547) , daughter of John Wensley (-aft 9 Dec 1675) & Elizabeth Paddy (13524) (12 Nov 1641-).2 Born on 14 Feb 1668 in Boston, MA. Mercy died on 3 Oct 1740; she was 72.2

3944. Matthew Cushing. Born on 16 Feb 1665 in Scituate, MA.48 At the age of <1, Matthew was baptized on 14 May 1665.39 Matthew died on 18 May 1715; he was 50.33 Occupation: wheelwright.39

Matthew was adopted by or at least lived with his uncle Matthew Cushing at Hingham, and at his uncle’s death inherited the homestead &c., and succeeded to his occupation of wheelwright. Selectman five years from 1703 through 1714.48

Matthew inherited a large portion of the estate of his uncle Matthew with whom he was brought up. He resided at Hingham Center.33

On 27 Dec 1694 when Matthew was 29, he married Deborah Jacob (7286) , daughter of Capt. John Jacob (4767) (ca 1630-18 Sep 1693) & Mary Russell (2032) (ca 1641-2 Oct 1691), in Hingham, MA.33 Born on 8 Aug 1677 in Hingham, MA.33 Deborah died in Hingham, MA, on 30 Nov 1755; she was 78.33

3945. Jeremiah Cushing. Born on 13 Jul 1666 in Scituate, MA.2 At the age of <1, Jeremiah was baptized on 15 Jul 1666.48 Jeremiah died in Scituate, MA, on 30 May 1710; he was 43.116 Buried in First Parish Cem., Scituate Harbor.

Jeremiah lived in Scituate and later in Boston. Admitted to the Second Church of Boston, 1672.48

On 12 Apr 1693 when Jeremiah was 26, he married Judith Parmenter, daughter of John Parmenter (ca 1645-1688) & Judith [Parmenter], in Boston, MA.2 Born on 17 Jul 1672. Judith died in 1734 in Boston, MA.

3946. James Cushing. Born on 27 Jan 1668 in Scituate, MA.2 At the age of 1, James was baptized on 21 Mar 1669.48

James lived in Scituate, of which he was town clerk for several years.48 Briggs7 interpolates another James between James and Col. John, and makes this James m. 2nd Lydia Barrell.

On 18 Jan 1710/1 when James was 41, he first married Sarah House, daughter of Samuel House (ca 1638-15 Jul 1702) & Rebecca Nichols (ca 1643-), in Scituate, MA.116 Born ca 1678 in Scituate, MA.6 Sarah died on 2 May 1712 in Scituate, MA.116

On 10 Dec 1713 when James was 45, he second married Mary Barrell (19525) , daughter of William Barrell (ca 1654-7 Nov 1689) & Lydia Turner (7863) (24 Jan 1653-20 Jun 1714), in the Second Church of Scituate.85 Born on 10 Sep 1686 in Scituate, MA.116 At the age of <1, Mary was baptized on 12 Sep 1686.135 Mary died in Scituate, MA, on 11 Sep 1748; she was 62.

3947. Joshua Cushing. Born on 27 Aug 1670 in Scituate, MA.2 At the age of <1, Joshua was baptized on 16 Oct 1670.48 Joshua died in Pembroke, MA, on 26 May 1750; he was 79.125 Buried in Pembroke, MA GR1.

Joshua and Mary lived first in Marshfield. In 1711, when Pembroke was incorporated, he is mentioned as one of the heads of families. Captain and first justice of the peace in Pembroke in 1711; later second Town Clerk. He removed to Kingston, Mass., at some time prevoius to 1725. His gravestone in Pembroke reads “dyed 26 May, 1750, in ye 80 yeare.”48

Joshua was twice a Representative; was Captain of the Militia, fist Justice of the Peace in Pembroke 1711, and later its second town clerk. He lived first in Marshfield, later in Pembroke, and before 1725 moved to Kingston.7

On 31 May 1699 when Joshua was 28, he married Mary Bacon (25117) , daughter of Samuel Bacon (25 Feb 1650/1-18 Feb 1680/1) & Mary Jacob (12861) (30 Mar 1656-16 May 1737), in Hingham, MA.116 Born on 7 Feb 1679/80 in Hingham, MA.33

The Marshfield Vital Records20 say “Joshua Cushing and Mary Bacon were Married May the 31 : 1699”

3948. Sarah Cushing. Born on 26 Aug 1671 in Scituate, MA.2 At the age of <1, Sarah was baptized on 27 Aug 1671.48 Sarah died in Scituate, MA, on 24 Sep 1723; she was 52. Buried in First Parish Cemetery, Scituate.

John Cushing, Sarah’s father, also recorded the marriage in his account book: “David & Sarah maried 20 december 1689”.63

According to Cushing48, Sarah died 8 Aug 1701.

On 20 Dec 1689 when Sarah was 18, she married Dea. David Jacob (7280) , son of Capt. John Jacob (4767) (ca 1630-18 Sep 1693) & Mary Russell (2032) (ca 1641-2 Oct 1691), in Scituate, MA.116 Born on 20 Jun 1664 in Hingham, MA.33 David died in Scituate, MA, on 10 Feb 1748; he was 83.116 Buried in First Parish Cemetery, Scituate.

From Deane’s History of Scituate:6
    “David came to Scituate 1688, when he purchased the lands of George Russell, (his uncle), on the southeast of Stockbridge's mill, the ancient Stedman place. His house stood near where stands the house of Mr Samuel Hatch, his descendant. That Russell house was burnt 1712, and another erected near the same place, which has been succeeded since by the spacious mansion of Mr Hatch. Dea. David Jacob was an active and useful man, always employed in publick business, and often also as town schoolmaster, there being but one school at that time.”

David ws the first master of the only public school in Scituate until 1712. In 1701 ‘The Town agreed with Dea. David Jocob to keep a reading, writin and grammar school for one year, in consideration of the sum of £20; also agreed with the same person to build a school house for £20.’ This schoolhouse stood between Jacob’s house and the Stockbridge mill.7

David Jacob was a Deacon of the First Church during the time of the controversy over building a new meeting house elsewhere thanupon the site of the earliest one on Meeting House Lane. The second house on ‘the gor of land’ near Balch’s (now (1936) the Town Common at Scituate Centre) was erected before his death.7

3949. Rev. Caleb Cushing. Born on 6 Jan 1673 in Scituate, MA.48 At the age of <1, Caleb was baptized on 11 May 1673.48 Caleb died in Salisbury, MA, on 25 Jan 1752; he was 79. Religion: ordained 9 Nov 1698.2 Education: Harvard 1692.48

    Caleb “was one of the numerous signers of documents in 1745, unfavorable to the itinerary of Whitfield, and endorsing the proceedings of Harvard College in 1744 in relation to his career. He was pastor of the Salisbury Church during a period of 56 years. ‘We know not the man in the County of Essex,’ says the eminent preacher of his funeral sermon, ‘who has moulded a broader and deeper influence on the minds of the people than this venerable devine.’
    “The Boston Evening Post stated: ‘He was of excellent natural parts, judgment and memory which so rarely meet, yet met in him in so eminent degree that it was not easy to say in which he excelled, and at the same time, he had the easiest and happiest temper, and most benign soul. He was a learned, solid divine, and of exemplary conversation, condescending, prudent, benevolent and a wise counsellor, remarkable for hospitality.’”

On 14 Mar 1698 when Caleb was 25, he married Elizabeth Cotton, daughter of John Cotton (15 March 1639/40-18 Sep 1699) & Joanna Rossiter (ca Jul 1642-12 Oct 1702), in Salisbury, MA. Born on 6 Aug 1663 in Guilford, CT.26 Elizabeth died in Sep 1743 in Salisbury, MA.

Elizabeth first married Rev. James Alling, second Rev. Caleb Cushing.

3950. Deborah Cushing. Born on 7 Sep 1674 in Scituate, MA. At the age of 1, Deborah was baptized on 4 Oct 1675.48 Deborah died in Little Compton, RI, on 18 Oct 1770; she was 96.224

On 19 Apr 1699 when Deborah was 24, she first married Lieut. Thomas Loring (6142) , son of Thomas Loring (1675) (ca 1625-1678/9) & Hannah Jacob (4771) (ca 1639-8 Oct 1720), in Hingham, MA.116 Born on 15 Mar 1667/8 in Hingham, MA.82 Thomas died in Duxbury, MA, on 5 Dec 1717; he was 50.58

Thomas removed to Duxbury, where he bought some land in 1702 and had grants of land from the town in 1710 and 1712. His farm was opposite the present village of Kingston, at Island Creek Was selectman and treasurer. He was lieutenant of the local military company.82

According to (48) Thomas was b. 15 Mar 1668 in Hull.

On 18 Jan 1728 when Deborah was 53, she second married Col. Sylvester Richmond, son of Edward Richmond (ca 1632-1696) & Abigail Davis (31 Oct 1635-bef Jul 1682), in Little Compton, MA (now RI).287 Born in 1672.224 Sylvester died on 22 Nov 1754 in Little Compton, RI.224 224 Sylvester Richmond of LIttle Compton & Deborah Loring of Duxbury.

Sylvester first married Elizabeth Rogers, second Deborah (Cushing) Loring. He was of Little Compton and Deborah of Duxbury when they married.

3951. Mary Cushing. Born on 30 Aug 1676 in Scituate, MA.48 At the age of <1, Mary was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 3 Oct 1676.193 Mary died in Scituate, MA, on 8 Mar 1698; she was 21.116

3952. Dea. Joseph Cushing. Born on 23 Sep 1677 in Scituate, MA.48 At the age of <1, Joseph was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 12 May 1678.193 Joseph died in Scituate, MA, on 12 Dec 1760; he was 83.116 Buried in South Parish Cem., Norwell.

Joseph purchased in 1707 from Phillip Turner a tract of land at Henchman’s Corner in the South Parish of Scituate, upon which the house of the late Dr. Heyward Warren Cushing stands (1936). Hoseph built a house upon this tract when he married, and a corner stone of this first house is imbedded in the lawn on Dr. Cushing’s estate. The original house was enlarged by his son, Deacon Joseph, Jr., and later it formed the ell of a large house built by the latter’s son George.7

After Joseph’s wife, Mercy, died, he did not remarry, and his wife’s sister, Alice Pickles was the foster-mother of young Joseph. Joseph was a Deacon of the Second Church, a Justice of the Peace, active in the community and greatly respected.7

On 1 Jan 1710/1 when Joseph was 32, he married Mary Pickles (15608) , daughter of Nathan Pickles (26285) (28 Jan 1661-) & Miriam Turner (5733) (8 Apr 1658-), in Scituate, MA.85 “Joseph Cushing and Mercy Pickles Were Married January 1st 1710-11 pr Mr Nathanaell Pitcher”. Born in May 1688 in Scituate, MA.116 Mary died on 30 Nov 1711 in Scituate, MA.116

Mary, also called Mercy, died a few days after the birth of her only child Joseph, Jr.

3953. Benjamin Cushing. Born on 4 Feb 1679 in Scituate, MA.2 Benjamin died in 1702 in Barbados.7 Occupation: Boston merchant.

Benjamin settled in Boston. He was a member of the Honorable Artillery in 1700 and at that time Lieutenant in another corps. He gave a Power of Attorney dated at Barbadoes, 1702, whence it is inferred he did business there.48
