4293. John Ensign. Born ca 1642 in Scituate, MA.176 John died on 26 Mar 1676 in Rehoboth, MA.2

John was one of the heroes under Capt. Michael Pierce of Scituate, who fell when Capt. Peirce and nearly all of his men were slain in the Rehoboth battle in 1676, better known as the Pawtucket Fight, in which Capt. Peirce and more than 60 of his men were slain on 26 Mar 1676, the Sabbath.7

John succeeded to his father’s mansion.6

John married Elizabeth [Ensign].

Although John’s wife Elizabeth is listed in various genealogies (such as the Jacob Turner’s 1852 Turner genealogy108) as Elizabeth Wade, a daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth, John’s wife, who is not mentioned in his will, is unknown.176 That Elizabeth Wade was married to Marmaduke Stevens by 1679, the year she was divorced from Stevens.

4294. Sarah Ensign. Born ca 1650 in Scituate, MA.176

On 3 Oct 1665 Sarah Ensigne, who was probably no older than 15 at the time, was convicted of ‘whoredom aggreuated with diuerse cercomstances’ and sentenced to be whipped (Plymouth Colony Records 4:106). On the same date Elizaeth Ensigne, widow, complained against Thomas Summers for £500 damage for “inticing and drawing away her daughter vnseasonably, and by vnlawfull meanes, against her will, and abusing her daughter.” The jury awarded her only 50s. and the cost of the suit (Plymouth Colony Records 7:126).176

Sarah first married Joseph Wade (14296) , son of Nicholas Wade (ca 1615-ca 1683) & Elizabeth Hanford (5048) (1621-). Born ca 1648 in Scituate, MA. Joseph died in 1676 in Rehoboth, MA.6

Joseph fell with Capt. Pierce in the Rehoboth battle, 1676.6

Sarah second married Thomas Mann, son of Richard Mann (-bef 16 Feb 1655/6) & Rebecca [Mann]. Born on 15 Aug 1650 in Scituate, MA.116 Thomas died in 1732 in Scituate, MA.303

Thomas was in the Rehoboth battle with Capt. Michael Peirce in 1676, and returned sorely wounded, one of the three survivors of the 15 Scituate men in that battle, and the only one whose name is known.7

4295. Hannah Ensign. Born ca 1652 in Scituate, MA.176

Hannah was the mother of Thomas’s first three children, Silence, Jacob, and Joseph, and it is not known if she was the mother of Thomas’s later children.176

ca 1670 Hannah married Thomas Wade (14295) , son of Nicholas Wade (ca 1615-ca 1683) & Elizabeth Hanford (5048) (1621-).176
