Thomas “was a distinguished lawyer of facetious memory, and cotemporary with and a familiar friend of Michael Wanton, a leader of the society of Friends. Turner was often playing off his jests and sarcasms upon Wanton, who, thought not so witty, perhaps, yet had his pertinent answer, and always received Turner’s raillery with good humor. On one occasion Wanton had been quite successful on a fishing excursion, and, on his return to White’s Ferry, he found an assemblage of gentlemen attending a reference trial, and among them Esq. Turner, who thus addressed him, ‘Friend Wanton, you are like the apostle Peter; in the first place he was a fisherman, and so are you; he was a preacher, and so are you; he denied his Lord, and so do you.’ Wanton was so much pleased with the witticism that he cause an entertainment to be perprared of his fish, and invited the whole company to dine. Tradition has it that the company, after partaking of the feast of fat things, and notwithstanding their high appreciation of the sarcastic wit of the lawyer, decided that Wanton had the advantage on that occasion, his display being much more substantial and useful.”108

Thomas “began to practice law in 1690, adn became a lawyer of note, a contemporary of Judge John Cushing, the first, and of Judge Joseph Otis. HE was likewise contemporary with the Quaker preacher, Michael Wanton, and although of different religious beliefs, tehy became very friendly. In 1711 Thomas Turner was a Representative to the Provincial Legislature, and served on various committees. He was a member of the committee for promoting the trade of the Province; to take account with the Treasurer and destroy torn and defaced bills of colonial currency, etc. He was returned as Representative in 1718 and 1719.”7
