On 20 Jan 1657/8 Elizabeth married Caleb Hobart (26883) , son of Thomas Hobart (14964) (ca 1605/6-18 Aug 1689) & Anne Plomer (-ca 1648), in Hingham, MA.33 Born ca 1633 in England.33 Caleb died on 4 Sep 1711 in Braintree, MA.33

Caleb, freeman 1671, had lands at Medford 1675, he also held mortgages.33

8343. Joseph Church. Born ca 1638 in Plymouth, MA.256 Joseph died on 5 Mar 1710/1 in Little Compton, MA (now RI).268 Occupation: carpenter.

“Joseph, prob. came to Hing. with his parents, 1653, and m. here [Hingham], Dec. 30, 1660, Mary, dau. of John Tucker. This fam. removed from Hing. soon after the birth of the youngest dau., as will be seen by the foll.: ‘May 26, 1679, Joseph Church late of Hing. 'carpenter', and Mary his wife in consideration of £114, sells to John Norton, pastor of the Church of Christ in Hingham all those their three lots of land which Richard Church, father of the said Joseph, formerly purchased of Ensign John Thaxter, with the dwelling-house, barns and orchards standing upon the said land,’etc. (S.R. Vol. II. p. 232). Constable, 1672.”33

Joseph and Mary moved from Hingham to Little Compton in 1679.256

On 30 Dec 1660 Joseph married Mary Tucker, daughter of John Tucker (-5 Aug 1661) & Ann Proude (-23 May 1644), in Hingham, MA.33 Born ca 1640. Mary was baptized in Hingham, MA, on 8 Oct 1640.33 Mary died on 21 Mar 1710 in Little Compton, MA (now RI).268

8344. Capt. Benjamin Church. Born ca 1640 in Plymouth, MA.24 Benjamin died on 17 Jan 1718 in Freetown, MA.282,224 Occupation: carpenter.

Benjamin was the first ‘Englishman’ to settle at Little Compton in 1675. He was a hero in King’s Philip’s War. He was involved early on in the war at Pease Field Fight in Jun 1675, later in the massacre at the Great Swamp in Dec 1675, and he lead the expedition that resulted in King Philip’s capture in Aug 1676. For a popular introduction to King Phililp’s War including Benjamin’s involvement and excerpts from his diary, see King Philip’s War: the history and legacy of America’s forgotten conflict, by Eric B. Schultz and Michael J. Tougias, Countryman Press, Woodstock, VT, 1999.

Benjamin dictated to his son Thomas his story published in 1716 as Entertaining Passages Relating to Philip’s War. Various editions have been published including The History of Philip’s War, Commonly Called the Great Indian War of 1675 and 1676, edited by Samuel Drake in 1829 and reprinted in 1989 by Heritage Book, Bowie, MD. On 26 Dec 1667 Benjamin married Alice Southworth (3538) , daughter of Constant Southworth (3380) (ca 1612-11 Mar 1678/9) & Elizabeth Collier (1002) (ca 1618-after 20 Feb 1678/9).256 Born ca 1646 in Duxbury, MA.256 Alice died on 5 Mar 1719 in Freetown, MA.282,224

8345. Nathaniel Church. Born ca 1642 in Plymouth, MA.256 Nathaniel died bef 29 Oct 1689 in Scituate, MA.256

“Nathaniel Church was born in Plymouth or Duxbury, and the youngest brother of Col. Benjamin the warrior. He was in Scituate 1666. His farm was laid out on the North river, south of Cornet Stetson’s, including the bald hills. His house stood near the river, opposite nearly to Job’s landing.”6

On 3 Mar 1662/3 Nathaniel Church and Elizabeth Soule were fined for committing fornication with each other. On 5 Oct 1663 Elizabeth Soule sued Nathaniel Church for committing fornication and denying to marry her. She was awarded £10.256

ca 1666 Nathaniel married Sarah Barstow (2616) , daughter of William Barstow (701) (ca 1612-1 Jan 1668/9) & Anna Hubbard (5390) (ca 1614-aft 23 Jun 1674), in Scituate, MA.5 Born ca 1645. Sarah was baptized in Hingham, MA, in Dec 1645.12 Sarah died aft 4 Nov 1717.255

8347. Caleb Church. Born ca 1646 in Plymouth, MA.256 Caleb died bef 26 Jun 1722 in Watertown, MA.256 Occupation: millwright.

Caleb resided in Dedham in 1762, later in Watertown, where he was admitted freeman 22 Mar 1689/90, and he was selectman 1692, 1698-1702, and representative to the General Court in 1713.

On 16 Dec 1667 Caleb first married Joanna Sprague (12825) , daughter of William Sprague (7594) (ca 1611-26 Oct 1675) & Millicent Eames (4199) (ca 1617-8 Feb 1695/6), in Hingham, MA.256 Born ca 1645 in Hingham, MA. Joanna was baptized in Hingham, MA, in Dec 1645.256 Joanna died on 11 Jul 1678 in Watertown, MA.256

Samuel, freeman 1678.2 Samuel was constable 1671 and resided on the paternal homestead, Main St.33
