Barnabas served in the Rev. war and took an active part in civil affairs in Scituate. Mass. In 1780, he moved to Rindge, NH.120 Barnabas was one of the “Roll of Honor Men” in Scituate who loaned money to carry on the war.7

On 21 Feb 1750 when Barnabas was 26, he married Sarah Greene (30857) , daughter of William Greene (20212) (24 Apr 1684-28 Jan 1756) & Desire Bacon (34527) (15 Mar 1688/9-29 Sep 1730), in First Parish Church, Scituate.116 Born on 27 Dec 1723 in Barnstable, MA. Sarah died in Rindge, NH, on 20 Feb 1797; she was 73. 116

On 14 Dec 1745 when Hannah was 21, she married Capt. James Briggs (20968) , son of James Briggs (8808) (2 Mar 1683/4-1754) & Hannah Stowell (13075) (9 Jul 1692-ca 1750), in Scituate, MA.116 Born on 27 Feb 1720 in Scituate, MA.116 James died in Scituate, MA, on 29 May 1804; he was 84.116

James was born in the family home in Scituate, now (1936) known as Stony Brook Farm. He was a soldier in the French and Indian War, and was with the New England troops under Col. John Winslow at the taking of Louisburg in 1744, one of the greatest achievemetns of the war. He also served in the Revolution, first in charge of a watch box on the Third Cliff, Scituate, in 1775, and later with troops.7

He began to build ships at Hobart’s Landing in about 1750, interrupted only by his services during the wars with the French and Indians, and later with the British troops. The Briggs’ shipyard at Hobart’s Landing had been occupied as early as 1645 by Thomas Nichols, by his don-in-law Samuel House, Jr., by Jeremiah, Walter, and Jeremiah Hatch, Jr., and by Israel Hobart, son of the Rev. Peter Hobart of Hingham, who died in 1731. James built in 1773 at Hobart’s Landing the first American vessel to circumnavigate the globe. This was the ship Columbia, which also explored the Columbia River in Oregon, which was named after the vessel. She was the first vessel from this country to visit the northwest coast.7

James purchased 20 Feb 1747 the homestead on Cross Street.7

On 29 Nov 1750 when Desire was 22, she first married Daniel Bell, son of Daniel Bell (ca 1685-May 1750) & Abigail Cunnabell (27 Dec 1691-ca 1765), in Brattle St. Church, Boston. Born on 11 May 1711 in Boston, MA. Daniel died in May 1767 in Boston, MA.

Daniel first married Miriam Gorham, second Desire Barker.
