Thereafter he occupied himself with mercantile pursuits, and was appointed collector of customs for the port of New Haven.
“At the outbreak of the War of the Revolution he was commissioned major general of the Connecticut Militia, and in June 1775 ranked third among the eight brigadier generals appointed by the continental Congress. After seeing active service in the campaign against Canada, eh resigned his federal commission and was appointed, in Oct. 1776, major general and commander in chief of the Connecticut Militia. At the burning of Danbury he went to the relief of that town with inferior forces, and was mortally wounded on 27 Apr. 1777.
