Pane-Joyce Genealogy
15656. Philip Friend. Born in 1718 in Germany. Philip died in West Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania on 3 Apr 1801. Buried in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery. Religion: Lutheran.

(It’s been suggested that Philip Friend was a son of Johannes Nilsson Friend and Anna Hendricksdotter Coleman. Johannes Friend’s will was signed 3-8-1737 at Penns Neck, and proved 2-1-1737/8. It named his children Andrew, Charles, Neals, Ephraim, John, Nanne, Mary and Sary, who has a daughter. There was no Philip named in Johannes’ will, so it’s unlikely Philip was the son of Johannes.)

A census of the inhabitants of Elizabeth Hundredn in Frederick County, Maryland, was taken August 1776 by John Miller. Elizabeth Hundred is what Hagerstown was called in 1776. The 1776 census appears in Maryland records, colonial, revolutionary, county and church, from original sources, by Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh, Baltimore: Williams & Wilkins, 1915

Photos of the original census for the Elizabeth Hundred are on pages 235–257. The census is unusual since the names are grouped by age and gender, so, for example, males aged 50 and upwards are listed together. The Friends listed in that census are
    Philip Friend, 58
    Elisabeth Friend, 50 [Philip’s wife]
    George Friend, 24
    David Friend, 22
    Philip Friend, 21
    Dorethe Friend, 18
    Catharina Friend, 16
    Christopher Friend, 12
    Elisabeth Friend, 10
George, David, and Philip are listed in sequence under males 16-50 suggesting they’re of the same family. Likewise, Catharina and Elisabeth are listed together under females aged 16 years and under. John Tobias Friend is not listed in the 1776 census.

    Philip Friend, 1718–1801
    Anna Elizabeth Friend, 1726–1797
There’s also buried in the cemetery a Catherine Friend, d. 12 Apr 1811 aged 68 years. She’s probably related somehow.
Philip married Anna Elizabeth Harsh, daughter of Hans Heinrich Hirsh (ca 1699-Sep 1740) & Juliana Veronica Schafer (ca 1700-12 Jun 1775). Born on 29 Nov 1726. Anna Elizabeth died in West Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania, on 2 Feb 1797; she was 70. Buried in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery.

Anna Elizabeth Horshberg, or Harsh.

Some of Philip and Anna’s children remained in Washington County, Pennsylvania, others moved to Ohio. There were many other Friend families in Ohio making it difficult to trace which ones are actually the descendants of Philip and Anna.
