24461. George Cushing. Born on 5 Jul 1736 in Scituate, MA.116 At the age of <1, George was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 11 Jul 1736.193 George died in Scituate, MA, on 4 Sep 1814; he was 78.116

Geroge Cushing was the first of the ‘four Georges,’ all of whom lived on the property near Henchman’s Corner, to which his father had added by purchase from heirs of Edward Prouty, upland and swamp land on the road to Mount Blue.7

On 9 Jun 1771 when George was 34, he married Lydia Cushing (24391) , daughter of James Cushing (12081) (16 Sep 1716-26 Oct 1772) & Mary Souther (27307) (3 Mar 1715/6-6 Jul 1787), in Scituate, MA.116 Born on 3 Dec 1743 in Scituate, MA.116 At the age of 12, Lydia was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 29 Feb 1756. Lydia died in Scituate, MA, on 3 Sep 1838; she was 94.

George and Lydia were second cousins as their paternal grandfathers were brothers.

On 25 Sep 1760 when Mercy was 21, she married Capt. Israel Vinal (31019) , son of Israel Vinal (24134) (21 Sep 1698-) & Elizabeth Booth (20525) (5 May 1703-), in Scituate, MA.116 Born in 1739 in Scituate, MA. Israel died in 1794 in Scituate, MA.116

Israel and Mercy lived on Booth Hill, North Scituate. Captain Vinal was very active during the days of teh Revolution, serving on many important committees, a delegate to the State Converntion at Cambridge to prepare a State Constitution in 1779, and Representative to the General Court 1783-84, and 1786-91.7

24464. Hon. Nathan Cushing. Born on 24 Sep 1742 in Scituate, MA.48 At the age of <1, Nathan was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 10 Oct 1742.193 Nathan died in Scituate, MA, on 4 Nov 1812; he was 70.116 Buried in South Parish Cem., Norwell. Education: Harvard 1763.48

Of Nathan: “‘He was first a preacher and afterwards a lawyer. He was a delegate to the Plymouth County Congress, held at Plympton 26 Sep 1774 and one of the signers of the manifesto issued at the Plymouth Congress 4 Oct 1774. In 1776 he was appointed Judge of Admiralty, and with great firmness condemned the captured British vessels, which brought him into notoriety as a patriot. He was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court in 1789, in which office he continued until 1801, when he resigned. He was afterwards a counsellor of the State. He was a gentleman of noble form, commanding countenance and courteous manners, distinguished more for solid judgment and discretion than for eloquence.’ When Massachusetts became a State, action was taken by the Legislature on the subject of a state seal and under date of 13 Dec 1870 we have the following record: ‘Ordered that Natahn Cushing be a committee to prepare a seal for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.’ His report was afterwards accepted and the device he recommended is still in use as the Arms of Massachusetts.”48

From the 1790 Mass. Census: "Cushing, Hono^ble Nathan, Esq^r 3 1 5" in the town of Scituate, Plymouth County. There were nine people in the household: three male adults (at least 18 years old), one male child, and five females.

On 11 Jul 1772 when Nathan was 29, he married Abigail Tilden (35900) , daughter of Capt. Christopher Tilden (30775) (3 Oct 1711-) & Sarah Parrot (24 Jul 1717-), in Pembroke, MA.116 Born on 7 Apr 1745 in Boston, MA. Abigail died in Scituate, MA, on 8 Nov 1810; she was 65.48

24465. Pickels Cushing. Born on 18 Feb 1743 in Scituate, MA.116 At the age of 1, Pickels was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 19 Feb 1744.193 Pickels died in Scituate, MA, on 15 Mar 1819; he was 76.116

At the time of his marriage, Pickles Cushing built the house upon the main street, in which his son, Pickles, Jr., resided.7

Pickels was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.48

On 29 May 1766 when Pickels was 23, he married Abigail Hatch (32705) , daughter of Ebenezer Hatch (23505) (ca 1721-23 Apr 1756) & Sarah Turner (ca 1727-), in Hingham, MA.116 Abigail died on 21 Oct 1813.48

Hawke was a carpenter and builder, and owner, with his brother Pickles, of the old Bryant Saw Mill on the Second Herring Brook, which they operated.7

Hawke was a private in the Revolutionary War.48

On 28 Sep 1769 when Hawke was 25, he first married Ruth Cushing (24315) , daughter of Josiah Cushing (12056) (29 Jan 1715-11 Dec 1793) & Ruth Thomas (25796) (12 Apr 1721-14 Sep 1806), in Pembroke, MA.116 Born on 24 Apr 1747 in Pembroke, MA.125 Ruth died in Jul 1788.116 cosumption.

Hawke and Ruth were second cousins as their paternal grandfathers were brothers.

On 4 Nov 1792 when Hawke was 48, he second married Abigail Clap (36368) , daughter of Nathaniel Clap Esq (32652) (11 Sep 1709-bef 19 Dec 1783) & Desire Bourne (31936) (19 Jan 1718/9-aft 9 Jul 1781), in the Second Church of Scituate.193 Born on 2 Dec 1750.279 At the age of <1, Abigail was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 10 Feb 1750/1.116 Abigail died in 1810.279

24467. Dr. Lemuel Cushing. Born on 16 Nov 1746 in Scituate, MA.116 At the age of <1, Lemuel was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 23 Nov 1746.193 Lemuel died in Tappan, NY, on 28 Oct 1776; he was 29. Education: Harvard 1767.48

Lemuel taught school in Weymouth MA 1769-70. He was educated for a physician and settled in Hanover. He was on the Committee of Correspondence and Safety for Hanover in 1775 and Surgeon in Gen. Thomas’s regt., Revol. Army. He was unmarried.48 7

Josiah and Deborah were second cousins as their paternal grandfathers were brothers.

On 26 Feb 1769 when Deborah was 16, she married Josiah Cushing (24314) , son of Josiah Cushing (12056) (29 Jan 1715-11 Dec 1793) & Ruth Thomas (25796) (12 Apr 1721-14 Sep 1806), in Scituate, MA.85 Born on 6 Feb 1742 in Pembroke, MA.125

“Josiah served in the Revolutionary War as Private in Captian Elijah Cushing’s Co. of Minutemen in 1775; also as Sergeant in Capt. James Hatch’s Co. 1776; also Captain 5th (Penbroke) Co., 2nd Plymouth Co. Regt. the same year. In 1778 he raised a company in Pembroke, Duxbury and Marshfield, which was employed on guard duty in the fort at Nantasket.”48

Caleb died in middle life, unmarried.48

24474. Alice Cushing. Born in 1756 in Scituate, MA.116 Alice was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 19 Jun 1757.193 Alice died on 26 Aug 1848 in Scituate, MA.116 “old age”.

Alice often spelled her name Ellis. Alice and Nathaniel were second cousins since their paternal grandfathers were brothers.

On 30 Jun 1774 Alice married Nathaniel Cushing (24353) , son of Hezekiah Cushing (12069) (14 Mar 1702/3-17 Jan 1790) & Lydia Jones (27471) (9 Jan 1706/7-28 Sep 1781), in Scituate, MA.421 Born on 30 Mar 1753 in Hingham, MA.33 Nathaniel died in 1794 in Scituate, MA.

Nathaniel purchased from Philip the estate known as the ‘Cushing Homestead’ of the late Nathan Cushing, a grandson of Nathaniel.7

Nathaniel and Alice settled in Scituate, MA. Nathaniel was a drummer in Capt. Wm. Turner’s (3rd Scituate) Co., Col. Anthony Thomas’s regt. 1775, also private in Capt. Nathaniel Winslow’s Co., Brig.-Gen. John Thomas’ regt. the same year, and Sergeant in Capt. Freedone Chamberlain’s Co., Col. Simeon Cary’s regt. in 1776.48

Nathaniel died suddenly on the road to Hanover in 1794. No record of his death has been found, other than this statement made by his descendants.7
