Joseph was a deputy in Portsmouth from 1771 through 1784.

On 20 Aug 1749 when Joseph was 20, he first married Elizabeth Davol (37148) , daughter of Joseph Davol (34414) (15 Dec 1702-1782) & Margaret Potter (30 Jun 1705-bef 1760), in Dartmouth, MA. Born ca 1730.
