29623. John Stebbins. Born ca 1679. John died on 18 Aug 1756 in Fort Edward, NY.

From Draper’s History of Spencer:319
    “Stebbings, Capt. John, was the son of Samuel Stebbings, and to him and his brother Joseph was assigned the first houselot of 30 acres in Leicester in 1714. They came from England at what time is not known, but he nor his brother were neither of them 21 years of age when they came to Leicester. The house lot was on "Strawberry Hill" and comprehended a considerable part of the village in Leicester. He was the first grantee named in the deed, which gave the easterly half of the town to the first 50 families, dated Jan. 8, 1724. He was a housewright by trade but he acquired only a moderate estate, yet he was a man of intelligence and influence and he was often promoted to offices in civil and military life.
    “He was a soldier in the French War in 1746, under Governor Shirley, in Canada and Nova Scotia. Again in 1755 and 1756 he was Captain of a Co. in the Regiment of Colonel Ruggles, stationed at Fort Edward, where he died at the age of 45, Aug. 18, 1756.”

John first married Sarah Southgate. Sarah died on 16 Nov 1742 in Spencer, MA.

    iii. Abigail Newhall, b. 7 Oct 1707, d. bef 1776, m. (int.) Dec 1734 Benjamin Earle (brother of Robert who m. Abigail’s sister Mary), resided at Leicester;
    iv. Lydia Newhall, b. 18 mar 1709/10, m. (int.) at Leicester Nov 1727 John Brown (son of William Brown of Leicester), resided at Leicester;
    v. Jonathan Newhall, b. 4 mar 1711/2, d. 8 Jun 1787 at Leicester, m. there (int.) 17 Oct 1731 Hannah Converse (dau. of Josiah Converse of Brookfield, MA), resided at Leicester;
    vi. David Newhall, b. 21 Mar 1713;
    vii. Esther Newhall, b. 7 Dec 1714, m. at Leicester 10 Jul 1732 David Allen; and
    viii. Dorothy Newhall, b 4 Dec 1717/8, m. (int.) at Leicester 7 Jun 1741 John Newhall of Malden (son of Daniel).218

Mary married Lieut. Thomas Newhall (13804) , son of Lieut. Thomas Newhall (16909) (18 Nov 1653-13 Jul 1728) & Rebecca Green (4800) (ca 1654-25 May 1725). Born ca 1680 in prob. Malden, MA.218 Thomas died bef 6 Apr 1776 in Leicester, MA.
