31248. Judith Coggin. Born on 28 Dec 1773 in Wilmington, MA.142
31249. James Coggin. Born on 15 Dec 1778 in Wilmington, MA.142 James died in Reading, MA, on 21 Jun 1826; he was 47.14
James and Mary resided in Reading.
(A question of middle names: James and Mary’s children were given middle names Thompson, Phelps, Aires, and Dix. Son Ebenezer Thompson Coggin was named after James’s step-father who brought him up. Dix was Mary’s surname. Phelps and Aires do not seem to be maternal surnames, except perhaps through James’s grandmother Mary Coggin. The first names Abner Gilman are puzzling, too. Perhaps Abner Phelps Coggin and Gilman Aires Coggin were named in honor of unrelated individuals.)
On 4 Oct 1804 when James was 25, he married Mary Dix (31540) , daughter of Jonathan Dix (21408) (23 Mar 1745/6-) & Sarah Viles (26043) (8 Jul 1748-28 Feb 1781), in Newton, MA.61 Born ca 1780. Mary was baptized in Watertown, MA, on 3 Dec 1780.11 Mary died in 1872 in Reading, MA. Buried in 1872 in Laurel Hill Cem., Reading.
The intention for marriage of Mary and James Coggins lists Mary as Nancy Dix. Nancy was Mary's cousin, a year older than Mary. Why is Nancy listed in the intention?
1850 census, Reading, p 237. Mary is listed as living with her daughter and son-in-law Mary and William Temple.
Mary is buried as Mary Dix 1780-1872 next to her daughter Mary C. Temple 1805-1886 and her family. (Why isn’t “Mary Coggin” on the gravestone?)
