Joseph and Abigail were second cousins in two ways: their paternal grandfathers were brothers, and his maternal grandfather and her paternal grandmother were siblings.

On 19 Jun 1766 Mercy married Nathaniel Waterman (29878) , son of Thomas Waterman (22009) (29 Apr 1710-27 Aug 1774) & Abigail Thomas (18769) (5 Apr 1710-5 Jan 1796), in Boston, MA. Born on 11 Jun 1742 in Marshfield, MA. Nathaniel died in Scituate, MA, on 27 May 1784; he was 41.
