From the Watertown, Massachusetts Records of Births, Deaths, and Marriages: John Viles and Susanna Bemis Both of Watertown were joined in Marriage by ye Rev'd mr Warham Williams Pastor of a Church in s'd town.
On 2 Jul 1731 when Susanna was 16, she married John Viles in Watertown, MA.29 Born ca 1707. John died on 4 Feb 1774 in Waltham, MA.29 Buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Waltham.
John was in Waltham by 1729. Waltham was a part of Watertown until 1738 when it was set off as a separate town.
It’s been suggested that the John Viles who married Susanna Bemis in 1731 in Watertown the same person as Jonathan Viall the son of John and Mary Viall born 21 Sep 1701 in Boston. Is that correct or is it just a case of similar names? Rarely is the name John is confused with Jonathan. Or was John a different son of John and Mary Viall, or was he no relation at all?
Peter H. Viles of Worcester, MA, has been researching the descendants of John and Susanna (Bemis) Viles. He wrote 4 Feb 2001 in VILES-L@rootsweb.com
I am Peter H. Viles of Worcester, Massachusetts, a "shirt-tail" cousin. I am descended from John Viles (? 1707-1774) and Susanna Bemis (1713/14-1785). They had 13 children, 6 boys and 7 girls. All of the girls and 3 of the boys (Joel, Jonas, John) had descendants. I am (John-Jonas-Jonas-Jonas-Charles-Jonas-Charles). My "project" is to find the descendants of John and Susanna through the next 4 generations (down to my g-grandfather, Charles Lowell Viles - 1846-1913). The Massachusetts Viles started in Watertown/Waltham and most stayed in the area for the next 100+ years.
I believe the "Maine Viles" start with Joseph Viles who married Sarah Wales in Boston in 1728. The Maine connection comes from their only son, Joseph, who went to Orland, ME in 1765. Because it is clear that John Viles was a "hired" boy n Waltham (taken in by the Thomas Smith family) and Joseph's origins are equally uncertain, it is possible that they are brothers. I believe the connection to John Viall/Vyall, a tavern owner in Boston/Swansea is spurious or, at least, of uncertain validity and unproven (at least to my satisfaction).
Because of the rarity of the surname, I am interested in all Viles, especially those of New England origin.
