John Foster was a soldier in the French War, and was at Crown Point in 1759. Returning from the French War he became a tavern keeper in the old Deacon Hatherley Foster house, where his father lived. This house was a busy center during the days of the Revolution, and many important meetings were held at ‘Landlord’ Foster’s. The old Foster house, built in 1697, was occupied by five generations of Fosters, and was demolished in 1898, then in a ruinous condition. One of the original windows of this house is [1836] preserved in the Kent Memorial house in Norwell Village.7

On 23 May 1765 when John was 25, he married Sarah Jacob (21748) , daughter of Dr. Joseph Jacob (12096) (16 Aug 1707-ca 1760) & Mary Foster (9532) (13 Aug 1711-aft 1761), in Scituate, MA.116 Born on 14 May 1741 in Scituate, MA.116 Sarah died in Scituate, MA, on 10 Mar 1787/1788; she was 45.193 Buried in Scituate, MA GR13. 85

John and Sarah were remotely related. They were half second cousins (common ancestor Timothy Foster) and third cousins (common ancestors John & Mary (Brewster) Turner).

34595. Elisha Foster. Born on 28 Apr 1745 in Scituate, MA.116 Elisha died in Scituate, MA, on 9 Jul 1827; he was 82.116 Occupation: shipbuilder.

Elisha was a shipbuilder at the Wanton shipyard, Norwell. In 1815 Elisha took his sons Seth, Samuel, and Walter, in company wiith him, and after that date the firm of Elisha Foster & Sons built several vessels taht became somewhat famous. Among them was the ship Globe, 235 tons, a whaler, which was the first vessel to bring 2000 barels of sperm oil into the United States. In 1824 a horrible mutiny occurred on her off Fanning’s Island, which brought the naem of this vessel further to public notice. In 1817 six vessels were built at the Foster yard.7

On 19 Oct 1769 when Elisha was 24, he married Grace Barstow (30223) , daughter of Dea. Samuel Barstow (21479) (7 Feb 1708/9-19 Nov 1801) & Margaret Stockbridge (19104) (19 Oct 1708-12 Apr 1788), in Hanover, MA.116 Born on 27 May 1748 in Hanover, MA.292 Grace died in Scituate, MA, on 7 Dec 1834; she was 86.116

Elisha and Grace were second cousins. His paternal grandmother and her maternal grandmother were sisters.

On 23 Jul 1777 when Sarah was 28, she married Dea. Elisha James (26419) , son of Dea. John James (14379) (5 Jun 1709-3 Sep 1764) & Prudence Stanton (8 Apr 1711-6 Aug 1783), in Scituate, MA.116 Born on 13 Aug 1744 in Scituate, MA.116 Elisha died in Scituate, MA, on 28 Dec 1833; he was 89.116

“Dea. Elisha succeeded to the residence of his grandfaterh, his father having resided at the place now [1831] owned by Mr Lemuel Jacob.”6

Elisha was a sergeant in Capt. Stockbridge’s company on the Lexington Alaram.

34598. Mary Foster. Born on 2 Dec 1750 in Scituate, MA.116 At the age of 1, Mary was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 8 Dec 1751.116

On 10 Aug 1775 when Mary was 24, she married Elijah Turner Esq. (27378) , son of Nathaniel Turner (15639) (5 Aug 1717-25 Jan 1796) & Mary Bailey (30987) (ca 1722-18 Apr 1792), in Scituate, MA.116 Born on 13 Mar 1749 in Scituate, MA.116 Elijah died in Scituate, MA, on 8 Apr 1823; he was 74.116

On 2 Nov 1774 when Ruth was 20, she married Lieut. Nathaniel Chittenden in Scituate, MA.116
