Valentine, minister, married them with Grace G. Brink and Mae M. Ward as witnesses.

Kent County Marriage Records indicate Bernie and Emma were married on 14 Dec 1901 in Green Lake, MI. He is 22, was born in Fisher Station, MI, and is a car inspector. She is 18 and was born in Caledonia, MI. His parents are Frank Race and Eva R. Barnum; hers are John Dettwieler and Marth Noggle. C. S. Wenger, clergyman, married them in Green Lake with Ephram Dettwieler and Mae Race as witnesses.
Kent County Marriage Records state that Bernie and Maude Toulds were married April 12, 1917 in Grand Rapids. He is 38, a railroad car inspector and was born in Fisher’s Station. Maude is 37, a domestic and was born in Michigan. Both have been married once. She was married to a man whose surname was Martin. Her parents are Walter Toulds and Elizabeth Culver and his are Frank Race and Eva Barmum. Chas. Evens, Pilgrim Minister, married them with Cleon and Mamie Patterson as witnesses. Book 18, p. 202

Everyone living in the house was born in Michigan. George’s parents were born in the Netherlands. Bernie’s father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in the United States. Both of the children’s parents were born in Michigan. Everyone can read and write. All of the children attended school in the past year. George is a Conductor, and Bernie is a Car Inspector on a steam railroad.

Death certificate 449 Kent County, Michigan states that Bernie died of a perforated gastric ulcer on March 26, 1929 in Grand Rapids. He was 49 years, eight months and six days old. His parents were Eva Barnum and Frank Race.
Obituary, Grand Rapids Press, 26 March 1929, page 32:
RACE --- Bernie William Race, aged 49, of 23 Andre St., passed away Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s hospital. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rhoda C. Race; three daughters, Mrs. Ralph Nicely, Mrs. Theodore Riegling and Miss Dorothy Race all of Grand Rapids; three sisters, one brother and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thurdsday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Clarence D. Sullivan Funeral Home. Interment in Holy Corners cemetery.
On 24 Dec 1901 William Birney first married Emma J. Dettwieler, daughter of John Detwiler & Martha Nable, in Green Lake, Kent County, MI. Born ca 1885 in Caledonia. Emma J. died on 22 Jun 1915 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI.
Kent County Death Records indicate Emma died 22 June 1914 in Grand Rapids of poisoning. She was 30 years, three months and 30 days old. She was a housewife and married. Her parents were John Detwiler, b. Canada and Martha Nable, b Ohio.

Martin and both of his parents were born in the Netherlands. He is a naturalized citizen and arrived in 1886. The rest of the family were all born in Michigan. Eva lists both of her parents as having been born in Pennsylvania. Martin and Eva have been married eight years and she has had two children, both of whom are living. He paints buildings and they rent their home.

Martin and both of his parents were born in Holland and they are of Dutch extraction. May and both of her parents were born in Michigan, as were both of the children. Martin came to the United States in 1885 and was naturalized through his father’s naturalization process. Everyone can read and write and speaks English. The family still rents their home. Martin’s occupation is that of Painter/Decorator.

Eva was born in Michigan, her father in New York and her mother in Vermont. Lester was born in Michigan, and the other two children in Missouri. Martin is a painter and interior decorator. Lester is a yeast salesman. Martin came to the United States in 1885.
