37885. Arthur J. Race. Born on 1 May 1880 in Croton, Mi. Arthur J. died in Newaygo, Newaygo Co., MI, on 29 Jul 1966; he was 86. Buried in Newaygo Cemetary. Services at Pieschel Funeral Home.

Newaygo County Historical and Genealogical Society Birth Cards state that Arthur J. was born 1 May 1880 in Croton Township to Norton and Letta Race of Croton. Norton is a farmer and both parents were born in New York. Book 1, page 163, number 2133.

Kent County Marriage Records
state that Arthur and Alba were married on 25 Nov. 1902 in Dutton, MI. Both are 22. He was born in Newaygo, MI and she in Dutton. He is a farmer and she is a domestic. His parents are N. S. Race and Violet Phelps; hers are George Gillet and Relta Hale. B. W. Woodward, clergyman, married them with E. Waters of Bowen, MI, and Florence Gillet of Gaines Township as witnesses.

27 September 1906, “South Evertt News,” Newaygo Republican:
“Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Race of north Brooks, Wednesday, the 19th an eight and one-fourth pound girl.”

1920 Newaygo Village, Newaygo County, Michigan Census has Arthur living on Fremont Street in Newaygo. Arthur and Alba are both 39, and Helen is 13. All were born in Michigan.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Race of Brooks Township will observe their 50th Wedding Anniversary, Tuesday, November 25. The couple married at Dutton, 1872, and moved here soon after. Celebration of the date will be limited to the immediate family.

Arthur Race Taken by Death


    Arthur Race, 86, of 97 Barton St. passed away Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Helen Teegardin. He was born May 1, 1880 in Croton and had lived his entire life in Newaygo County. He had farmed in Oak Grove and Brooks Township. He attended Fry Chapel in Egypt Township.
    HIs wife Alba preceded him in death March 23, 1958. Besides his daughter he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Edith Scott of Newaygo, a brother, Erwin of Sparta; three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
    Services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Pieschel Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Sickler officiating. Interment was in Newaygo Cemetery.

Arthur Race lived his entire life in Newaygo County. He farmed in Oak Grove and Brooks Townships. Services were held at the Pieschel Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gene Sickler officiating. Internment was in Newaygo Cemetary. He was survived by one daughter, Helen Teegardin, three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He attended Fry Chapel in Evert Twp. at death.

On 25 Nov 1902 when Arthur J. was 22, he married Alba Gilette, daughter of George F. Gilette & Relta Hale, in Dutton, Kent County, MI. Born on 16 Jan 1880 in Born in Dutton, Michigan. Alba died in Newago, Newago Co., MI, on 23 Mar 1958; she was 78. Alba Race lived in Brooks Township, Newaygo County when she died. Buried on 28 Mar 1958 in Newaygo Cemetery. Section F Lot 200 Grave 2.

    RITES HELD ON WEDNESDAY FOR MRS. ALBA RACE

    Mrs. Alba Race, 78, longtime Newaygo resident, died Sunday at her home in Brooks township.
    She was born January 16, 1880, at Dutton and was married November 25, 1902 to Arthur Race and the couple had made their home here since then. Mrs. Race was a member of the First Baptist church.
    She leaves her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Helen Teegardin of Newaygo; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lura Getzman of Dutton, Mrs. Lloyd Overholt of Stoubaugh, Alabama, Mrs Florence Ring of Riverside, California; and, two brothers, George Gillette of Hastings and Ralph of Needles, California.
    Funeral services were held at 2'clock Wednesday afternoon at the First Baptist church with Rev. Elvin K Mattison officiating. Burial was in Newaygo Cemetary.

Edith M. Scott, 94, Brooks St. Newaygo, died Thursday, Sept, 8, 1977 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility. She was born in Grand Rapids, May 5, 1883. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newaygo. She was married Sept. 14, 1930, in Howard City. Her husband, George, died May 25, 1952. Survived by one brother, Erwin Race of Sparta, four neices and one nephew. Services were held Saturday, Sept. 10 at two p.m. from the Clarence Pieschel Funeral Home. Rev. Charles Vermilya officiated. On 14 Sep 1930 when Edith May was 47, she married George Alfred Scott in Howard City, MI. Born on 11 Aug 1874 in Coral, MI. George Alfred died in Newaygo, MI, on 25 May 1952; he was 77. Buried in Newaygo Cemetary.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock in the Methodist church for George Alfred Scott, aged 77, who passed away Sunday morning at his home, following a heart attack.
Mr. Scott was born August 11, 1874, at Coral, and moved to a farm south of Bill's Lake, in 1931. For the past seven years has lived on a farm a mile east of Newaygo. HIs only survivor is his wife, the former Edith Race. Interment was in the Newaygo cemetary. The Rev. Charles Martin officiated.

Medical: Died of heart attack.

37887. Erwin Norton Race. Born on 22 May 1884 in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI. Erwin Norton died in Oct 1979 in Walker, Kent Co., MI. Buried in Oct 1979 in Newaygo Cemetary. Occupation: carpenter, furniture craftsman.

Newaygo County marriage records state that Erwin married Donna on 27 June 1913 in Newaygo. He is 29, was born in Newaygo and is a carpenter. She is 20, was born in Ohio and is a teacher. His parents are Norton Race and Violette Phelps, hers are David L. Harden and Dora E. Hitchcock. C. Van Camp, minister marries them with Emma Joslin and Edger Mc Cann as witnesses.

Race (Sparta) --- Erwin N. Race Sr., aged 95, formerly of Sparta and Grand Rapids, passed away Tuesday at Kent Community Hospital. He is survivied by his family, George and Crystal Keller, Robert and Hope Joyce, Marion Crowley all of Sparta, Erwin Jr. and Patsy Race of Comstock Park: 10 grand children and 14 great grand children. Funeral services will be held Thursday 11 AM at the funeral home, with Rev. Ronald Entenman officiating.

Kent County Death Records indicate Erwin died July 10, 1979 at Kent Community Hospital in Grand Rapids. Causes of death were congestive heart failure (three days), arteriosclerotic heart disease (years), and a hip fracture. He was widowed and a furniture craftsman. He was a resident of the Grandview Nursing Home. He was born 22 May 1884 in Kent County. His parents were Senaca Norton Race and Lettie Phelps. Informant was Mrs. Crystal Keller. He was buried at the Newaygo Cemetery on 12 July 1979 from the Hessel Cheslek Funeral Home. #156683

On 27 Jun 1913 when Erwin Norton was 29, he married Donna June Harden (38181) , daughter of David Louis Harden (22 Jul 1857-9 Jan 1927) & Dora Etta Hitchcock (37617) (20 May 1856-30 Dec 1915), in Newaygo, Newaygo County, MI. Born on 27 Jun 1892 in Medina, OH. Donna June died in Apr 1973. Buried on 23 Apr 1973 in Newaygo Cemetary, Sec A Lot 577 Grave 3. Occupation: teacher, homemaker, salesperson at Wurzburg's Dept. Store. Education: Grad. Newaygo County Normal Sch. Jun 7, 1911.

“Miss Donna Harden is spending a few days with friends and relatives in Grand Rapids.”

Newaygo County Sexton’s Records indicate Donna died of Coronary Thrombosis. She was interred on 23 April 1973 in the Newaygo Cemetery in Section A, Lot 577, Grave 3,

Donna’s obituary appeared in the Grand Rapids Press Sat 21 Apr 1973.
