Virginia H. Eames, 86, died Monday, May 26, 2008 Memorial Day at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood, NH where she lived the past 4 years. Both of her children were with her when she died.
Her husband, Herman "Gardie" Eames, also a resident of the nursing home, pre-deceased her on March 20, 2005.
Virginia was born June 11, 1921 to Irene and Harley R. Hatfield of Wakefield, MA. Graduating with the Class of 1939 from Wakefield High School, "Gini", as she preferred to be called, was a cheerleader and Worthy Advisor of the Rainbow Girls; she was a charter member of the Rainbow and Auxiliary of the D.A.V., Manchester, NH Chapter.
On Valentine's Day, 1946, Gini married Herman Gardner Eames of Wakefield, MA.
During the Vietnam War, Gini and a few other Massachusetts mothers organized a group calling themselves "Concerned Mothers of America". The movement spread and eventually became a national choice for those who had lost sons and others concerned at the growing number of Vietnam War casualties. A talk-radio appearance was held and in 1972, Gini and three other members drafted a "Mother's Declaration Against the War", which was read into the Congressional Record by Senator Edward Brook, the nation's first black senator.
The Eames' moved to N.H. in 1978.
Gini was a tender, loving woman with an infectious sense of humor and a profound interest in American Indian Culture, which she generously shared with all who knew her.
She is survived by one daughter, Gayle E. Johnson of Epping, NH and one son, Glenn R. Eames of Burlington, VT., one grandson, Bryan Johnson of Kittery, ME., a sister-in-law, Ardis Hatfield of Derry, NH and several nieces and nephews. A grandson, Grayel G. Johnson, died in 2002.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the charity of your choice.
