John T. Walden

Jack was born and raised in Meridian, Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in journalism and worked as a reporter and newspaper editor for papers in Mississippi and Alabama. He served in the Marines in the Pacific during World War II and as a combat correspondent during the Korean War. He moved to the Washington area in 1959. His career included serving as a press aide and speechwriter on Capitol Hill and serving in public affairs positions with the Surgeon General's office of the U.S. Public Health Service, the U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. After retiring from the federal government he worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 18 years until his second retirement in 1996.
    Jack was a beloved husband and father who was very devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan Stephenson Walden, and four daughters, Janis Walden Bobier (Kevin); Teresa Lee Walden; Jackie Luanne Hamilton (William); and Stephanie Elizabeth Walden. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Lauren Claire Gerber (David), Daniel Walden Bobier, and Sara Luanne Hamilton; a sister, Shirley Walden Coats; a great-grandchild, nieces, and nephews.
    Family and friends may call at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Dr. Alexandria, VA on Saturday, March 22, 2014 for a visitation from 12:00 -1:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM.
    Jack's favorite pastime was sailing on the Chesapeake Bay with his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403. www.cbf.org.
