Edmund Freeman, on behal of his five living children, brought suit in Chancery Court, 28 Nov. 1633, against William Hodsoll and Elizabeth his wife (the widow of John Hodsoll, Jr., had apparently married his cousin), John Gratwicke, gent., William Freeman (his own brother and brother-in-law), and others, in regard to the disposition of certain lands which had formerly belonged to his father-in-law, John Hodsoll. many depositions are in the file, and one of them provides the baptismal record of four of Edmund’s surviving children at Billingshurst, co. Sussex, copied from the register there, a register which now cannot be found.
He owned lands in both Pulborough and Billingshurst; removed to the latter place in 1619-20, but returned to Pulborough by 1627. On 1 Jul 2635, he and his family were entered on the shipping list of the Abigail, Robrert Hackwell, Master, as “Edward” Freeman, aged 34; wife Elizabeth, 35; Alice, 17; Edmond, 15; Elizabeth, 12; and John, 8. His own age is badly understated, but the ages of the children are as accurate as we usually find in the shipping lists. A couple of weeks before, six other Freemans, of assorted ages, had been accepted to sail on teh Abigail, but their connection if any with our Edmund is unknown, though one of htem was an Edmond Freeman, aged 45.
The list proves that Edmund had married his second wife Elizabeth in England, after the deat of Bennett (Hodsoll), and not, as Mrs. Ferris surmised, “probably either on the voyage to New England or soon after his arrival.” Mrs. Ferris also surmised that Edward Perry, whom Edmund Freeman called “son” in his will and to whom he gave considerable property, was a stepson, the son of Edmund’s second wife Elizabeth, rather than that Perry’s wife was a daughter of Edmund, which would make him a son-in-law. However, no Edward Perry was named in the shipping list, and if Elizabeth had such a son, who whould have been quite young at the time, it seems likely he would have accompanied his mother. Futhermore, Edward Perry’s son Benjamin named a son Freeman Perry, which would be for Benjamin’s mother if Edward’s wife was Mary Freeman. We therefore prefer the older view, that Edmund Freeman, had a daughter Mary, born not long after the family arrived in New England, who married Edward Perry.
Edmund Freeman first settled at Saugus, now Lynn, Mass., but in 1637 or earlier, a movement was on foot for a number of families there to move to Sandwich on Cape Cod. In 1647 Edmund, as agent for this group, received a deed from the Colony, and he devised the lands to the new town and its proprietors. He was formally made a freeman of Plymouth Colony, 2 Jan. 1737/8, and probably was living in Sandwich the preceding year.
These settlers were Puritans rather than Pilgrims, many of them merchants and some of them well-to-do. As a group there were far more tolerant than many of the Bay Colony leaders, shown by the fact that their neighborhood became the earliest stronghold of Quakerism in Plymouth Colony, the first Monthly Meeting at Sanwich being established in 1660.
Edmund was a Deacon in his own church, and 1643 he and his sons Edmund and John were among those “able to bear arms” in Sandwich. Edmund^1 served on the Grand Jury in 1636 and 1647, as Assistant continuously from 1640 to 1646, and as a Representative in 1646. Edmund was referred to a s”Mr.” and “Gent.,” indicating his social standing. His “son” Edward Perry was infected with Quakerism and refused to have his marriage performed by the local magistrate, and Edmund appears to ahve countenanced this irregularity. He acquired much property, and engaged in the beaver trade, acting as agent of John Beauichamp (his brother-in-law) and others in England.
His will, dated 21 Jun 1682 (inventory taken 4 Oct. 1682) made his “three sons,” Edmond Freeman, John Freeman, and Edward Perry, executors, and his daughter, Elizabeth Ellis, executrix; confirmed all conveyances of lands (he had already given much of his property to his heirs), mentioning land given to his grandson Matthias Ellis; gave specified land to his grandson Thomas Paddy; and divided all the rest of his lands between the above-said three sons and daughter. In 1875 the rocks which served as monuments for himself and his wife Elizabeth on the hiss of the Freeman farm were still in place.
On 11 Jun 1617 Edmund first married Bennett Hodsoll, daughter of John Hodsoll (ca 1570-15 Sep 1666) & Faith Gratwick, in Cowfold, Sussex.14 Born ca 1597 in England. Bennett died in Pulborough, Sussex in Apr 1630. Buried on 12 Apr 1630 in Pulborough, Sussex.14
