From the Rathbone Genealogy:389
“John Rathbone was made a freeman of Rhode Island May 1, 1696, and on Oct 13th of the same year was appointed a deputy to the General Court for New Shoreham. He was surveyor of highways in 1676, and deputy from 1681 to 1684. Just before his marriage he received from his father a deed to 60 acres of land on Block Island, the consideration being ‘one barrel of pork.’ From some old records we learn that Great James and his wife (Indians) bound their daughter Betsey to John Rathbone and his wife Ann as an indentured servant for the period of 18 years; the consideration being ‘one gallon of rum, one blanket in hand, and five years afterwards one gallon of rum yearly thereafter, and if she remains five years, the said Rathbone to pay to pay four blankets, and every third year thereafter.’ April 28, 1717 he testified in relation to the seizure, by a pirate sloop of which Paul Grove Williams was the commander, of three men-- George Mitchell, William Tosh, and Dr. James Sweet-- who were with him in a boat which at the time of the seizure was lying in the harbor bay. Gov. Cranston wrote Col. Shull in regard to the matter, that, ‘in case the pirate Williams should fall into your excellency's hands, the poor men therein mentioned may secure such favor as justice will allow.’”

15779. Capt. Thomas Rathbone. Born ca 1656/1657 in Dorchester, MA. Thomas died in New Shoreham, RI on 20 Dec 1733.

From the Rathbone Genealogy:389
“He was made a freeman May 5, 1696; was a deputy in 1700, 1703, 1704, 1705, 1711, 1730 and 1731; was admitted a freeman of New Shoreham in 1711, and was a representative in the General Assembly of Rhode Island in 1709, also in 1711 and 1731. In 1702 he was appointed a committee to audit the General Treasurer’s accounts and all other debts.
“He died Dec. 20, 1733. His will was dated Nov. 16, 1733, and letters of administration upon his estate were granted in 1734. To each of his sons Thomas and Samuel he bequeathed a farm of 30 acres and one negro girl, while to his son John he made a similar bequest and in addition gave to him a negro boy. Following is an inventory of this personalty at the time of his death: Four oxen, nine cows, six two-yearling cattle, eight calves, 180 sheep, 30 lambs, seven swine, one horse, one mare, one silver tankard, one large and one small silver cup, one old porringer, one spoon; one negro, Mingo, valued at £60; one negro woman valued at £40; one negro boy, Ouoming, valued at £80; and negro wenches valued at £200; total value of goods and chattels, £838.1.6. As there were only about 20 negroes on Block Island in 1730, it would appear from the forgoing inventory that fully one-fourth of the entire negro population of the island belonged to Thomas Rathbone.
“From Smith’s History of Dutchess County, N. Y., published in 1882 by Mason & Co., of Syracuse, we learn, on page 362, that Thomas Rathbone (Rathbun), of New Shoreham (Block Island), conveyed to the following named individuals, at the times designated, one-seventh of all his right to land in the town of Pecapshe (Poughkeepsie): Feb. 4, 1730, to his son-in-law, Samuel Eldred, of North Kingston, R. I., and to --- Cordwinder and his wife; Dec. 24, 1730, to his son-in-law, Benjamin Bently, of Greenwich, R. I, and Patience, his wife; to Jonathan Rathbone, of Lyme, Conn., and Sarah, his wife; Feb. 10, 1731, to his daughter, Syble Wilcox, widow, residing with him at New Shoreham. The sons, Thomas, Samuel and John, and the sons-in-law, Benjamin Bently and Samuel Eldred, made a division deed in 1774, Samuel being Town Clerk at the time.”
