From Jacobus’ Bulkeley Genealogy:6
Joseph “taught school in York, Newbury, and Malden. In 1719 went to live with his uncle Waldo in Boston, where he completed his studies in divinity. In 1721, he was invited to preach at Malden, and was ordained there 31 October. His pastorate there lasted forty-six years until his death. His sermons were carefully prepared, written out, and delivered with earnestness and force; several of them were published.
“On 31 July 1724, his residence was burned down. He assembled his family and sang, ‘There is a house not made with hands.’ A public contribution was taken up; within a short time a new parsonage was erected. A new meeting house was built in 1730. Dr. Wellman spoke of Mr. Emerson’s ‘high reputation as a scholar, who delighted in scholarly studies. Though a prolonged and fierce conflict raged in the town, during his ministry, respecting the location of the meeting house, yet he was not reproached by any as the cause. He was a positive man, spoke openly and preached faithfully, but appears to have retained the respect of both parties. He must have been a man of vigorous health, as during his long ministry of more than forty-five years, he lost but two Sabbaths by sickness.’
“The town record of his death states that he ‘had been in the Judgment of charity a faithfull minister here, and that for the space of forty and five years, deceased in the evening very soon after Iying down to sleep who was cheirly and in health before.’”
