Joel and Sarah “left North Haven 4 May 1799 in ox-carts for Ohio. They originally settled 30 miles west of Cleveland. Sarah was treated well by Indians because she fed a group of them who came once when she was alone in her cabin. The family moved to Buffalo in the spring of 1809. He commanded a company in the Beaver Dam fight in the 1812 War. His house was burned when Buffalo was taken by the British.”488
