In the deeds that passed in the settlement of his father’s estate, Joseph is called both ‘tin-plate worker’ and ‘card-maker’. In about 1787 he began to sell out his interest in Roxbury real estate to other members of his family, and on 21 Aug 1789 he signed a deed as a resident of Walpole, NH, where the first census (1790) shows him to be living with a family consisting of himself, wife, daughter, and three sons under sisteen. From there he seems to have moved to Troy, NY, where his youngest child was born.54
