Samuel Simmons came to Hingham when about 10 years of age and lived awhile in the family of Jairus Leavitt. He afterwords learned the trade of “carpenter” with Capt. Duncan McBean Thaxter; and at a later period was for ten or twelve years in the employ of the United Stated government engaged in the construction of light houses along the southern coast.
