From Lincoln’s History of Hingham:45
John Manuel was known in his early life in Hingham as “the French boy.” At or about the time of the French Revolution he ran away from a French war ship on board of which he had been placed, and came to the United States with Capt. Luther Lincoln of Hingham. Here about 1799, he was “put out to live” by Dr. Joshua Barker, Capt. Lincoln’s attorney, as an apprentice to Thomas Web of Weymouth. The original indenture, still in the family possession [as of 1893], was published in full in the Quincy Patriot of 31 May 1884, partly as a curiosity, but more especially to show a custom which prevailed at the commencement of the present century.
John resided on Fort Hill Street for many years.
