Thomas Fry (49755) & Sarah Fulk
59992. John Fry. Born on 26 Jul 1803 in Gardelman, Surrey. John died in Leslie, Ingham County, Michigan in Aug 1865. Buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Leslie. Occupation: Farmer.

The town of Dansville, New York, was once much larger than it is now. It was divided into smaller towns from 1812 through 1854. The part of it that contained the village of Dansville ended up in the town of North Dansville in Livingston County. The original town of Dansville remains as the northwest town in Steuben County.

In one of John’s son Leonard’s marriage records, Leonard says he was born in Rogerville, New York. There’s a small village called Rogersville in the town of Dansville. It’s not on all maps. On the 1873 Steuben County Atlas, Rogersville is written over South Dansville, which also isn’t on all maps. On Martha’s marriage record, it says she was born in South Dansville. South Dansville Road, that is, County Road 46, runs through South Dansville, and there are still a few houses there. The whole town of Dansville, Steuben County, is still mostly farms, and one of them near South Dansville was the Fry farm. The 1873 Steuben County Atlas doesn’t identify any land owned by anyone named Fry. They had probably all left for other parts of the country.

On 4 Mar 1823 when John was 19, he married Elizabeth Wakeford, daughter of Thomas Wakeford (5 Mar 1767-17 Sep 1831) & Martha Holden (22 Oct 1766-27 Sep 1848), in Lurgashall, Sussex. Born in 1802 in Northchapel, Sussex. Elizabeth died in Leslie, Ingham County, Michigan in 1868. Buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Leslie.

On her son John’s 1880 census record, it says his mother was born in “Isle of W” which would probably be the Isle of Wight.
