49755.Thomas Fry. Born ca Sep 1777 in Godalming, Surrey. Thomas was baptized in Godalming, Surrey, on 30 Sep 1777. Thomas died in Leslie, Ingham County, Michigan in Aug 1861. Occupation: Farmer, carpenter.
Thomas Fry and John Fry appear in the census records for Dansville, Steuben County, New York, in 1840, but not in 1830. From the birth records of Thomas and Sarah’s son John’s children, it appears that John and Sarah’s family moved from England to New York between 1832 and 1835. According to grandson Henry’s 1910 census record, he immigrated in 1834 which sounds right (but many of the immigration dates of the children are off). It’s likely that Thomas and son John moved at the same time about 1834.
“History of our Grand and Great-Grandparents Compiled and read by Jesse D. Fry of Grand Rapids643
The first verbal information that the writer has, is- that there were two half-brothers, by the name of Thomas and Daniel Fry. There appears also a sister, who was Daniel’s full sister and Thomas’ half-sister.
The family resided at Gardelman, County of Surry, england, about 30 miles from London. Daniel Fry and the sister, Mrs. Cox, came to America about 1836. He remained in New England, while Mrs. Cox went South and we have no further information of her.
Thomas Fry raised seven children - Betsey, Ellen, Thomas, Ann, Sarah, Fred and Fannie. Betsy married a Mr. Radcliff and had two children - Harriet who married a Mr. Tillingest, having one child, and Ida who married Mr. Wilson. Ellen married Mr. Damatio and bore Isabelle, Albert and Addie. Isabelle married Mr. Potter and bore Dorothy. Albert married and had Bert and Belle. Anna, Daniel’s Daughter married Mr. Hammond and lived in Providence, L.I., no children. The Damatios also lived there. Anna Hammond later moved to Pasadena, Calif. Sarah Fry, her sister, married Mr. Talor, had two sons and a daughter. Fannie Fry married Mr. Sweetland, had a son, Harry, and two daughter, Ella, who married Mr. Harvy, bearing two children, and Clara, who married Mr. Richards. Harry had a son and a daughter.
This information about the Daniel Fry family was obtained fromt he Damatios when the witer was on a trip East in January, 1889.
The descendants of the Thomas Fry family have no information of his half-brother, Daniel’s descendants.”
One of James Fry’s marriage records says he was born in Geneva, NY, and that was in 1835, so perhaps the family moved there for a bit before settling at Dansville. 1840 Federal Census. Dansville, Steuben County, New York Roll 340, page 8 Family of Thos. Fry
