John Dinehart (64427) & Laura J. Soule
66778. Peter Monroe Dinehart. Born on 21 Mar 1827 in Columbia County, New York. Peter Monroe died in Jerusalem, Yates County, New York, on 3 Jan 1904; he was 76. Buried in Old Fort Cemetery, Jerusalem. Occupation: Farmer.

It’s not clear who Peter M. Dinehart’s father was.

In the 1875 census, his uncle Thomas Dinehart was living with him, so he was the grandson of Peter J. Dinehart and Margaret Bechtel. Margaret is listed on the census records of 1860 and 1865 with Peter M. Dinehart’s family, and called “mother” on the 1865 census, but that should have been “grandmother”, either that, or in the 1875 Thomas should have been listed as “brother” instead of “uncle”. Yet the two older sons of Peter J. and Margaret, namely Peter J. Dinehart Jr and John Dinehart, have census records that are incompatible with Peter M. Dinehart being either of their sons. The younger sons weren’t old enough to be Peter M.’s father.

From the History of Jerusalem by Miles A. David, published 1912, page 95: “Peter M. Dinehart built the store in Sherman’s Hollow in 1883. He was postmaster at Friend eleven years.”
