Ellen Marjerison, 84, died June 19, 2013, peacefully with her family around her in her home in Ayer, Mass.
Born in New Bedford, Mass. on Feb. 24, 1929, she was the daughter of Frank Kremp, engineer of the navigational radio stations of RCA in Marion and Chatham, and Catherine Louisa "Kate" (Tennant) Kremp, who passed on her generosity and talents, including reading, music, cooking, crafting, and hospitality to Ellen. Ellen grew up in Marion, Mass. There she and her little brother Bob waited out the 1938 hurricane in the upstairs of their home, and thought it something of an adventure to look out at their father rowing the neighbors to safety.
Ellen attended local schools and Tabor Academy before studying retail buying and nursing. A cellist, she formed part of a musical combo with her mother on piano and her older sister Mary on violin. By all accounts she was lovely, witty, and popular. In 1949, she married Mitchell Marjerison, who had served as an Army medic during the Normandy campaign and the rest of the war in Europe.
They had five children, Jeffrey, Cathy, Bill, Susan, and Chris. She loved days at the beach with her family and decorating her home. She enjoyed the travel and entertaining that were part of building her husband's Volkswagen dealership, the first on Cape Cod. To her great sorrow Jeffrey died tragically in a car accident at age six. She brought skill and enthusiasm to the work of running the Sun Valley Inn in North Conway from 1970 to 1972. Later on she worked as teller, and eventually chief teller, at First National Bank of West Yarmouth, Mass. Many people, would spend extra time in her line to receive her combination of patient banking service, wit, and TLC.
She spent several years in Japan to help with the care of her young grandchildren. In later years she cared for both her parents in their old age. She moved to the O'Malley apartments in Ayer, Mass. in 2001. There she provided her family, neighbors, and home health aides with a mix of humor, cooking, knitting, baby-sitting, and hospitality, including holiday buffet tables for neighbors unable to get together with their own families. Wry signs decorated her apartment: "Kitchen closed due to illness." "Beauty don't last. Cookin' do," and "It's not easy being the Queen."
Over the years, Ellen enjoyed evenings at bingo or the special treat of an excursion with family to Foxwoods. She played a mean game of cribbage, rooted for the Red Sox in good years and bad, and appreciated the taste of a Cape Codder. Woolen caps that she knit for her relatives sported campaign slogans for Hillary Clinton and revising Congress. Ellen loved to kid, and sent many a funny card, letter, or gift. In 2006 she shared the grief of her family at the sudden death of her granddaughter Rebecca Murphy. She so loved her family. Cathy lived close by and shared many a night knitting and gabbing. Even though Bill lived in Japan, she looked forward to his Thanksgiving visits, emails, Facebook replies and had even progressed to Skype. She loved Susie's laughter and zucchini relish, Chris's paintings and collection of Native American artifacts, and playing "Trouble" with her grandchildren. Diagnosed with terminal cancer in March of 2013, Ellen maintained her equanimity, sense of humor, and care for her extended family, who addressed her in emails as "Sister Meg," "Mommy," or "Grams." During her final illness the staff of Stewart Hospice Care was devoted in looking after her, enabling her to stay in her own home, amid family, neighbors, mementos, and her own cluttered picture gallery of children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Knight, of Shirley, Mass.; son, William Marjerison (Chikako), of Mitaka, Tokyo, Japan; daughter, Susan Marjerison, of Conway; son, Christopher Marjerison, of South Yarmouth, Mass., 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister Mary Shipps, her brother Bob Kremp, her son Jeffrey, and her granddaughter Rebecca.

A fall service is planned in Chatham, MA. Loved as the caring and witty matriarch of her family, she endured much, gave much, and enjoyed much in her 84 years.
