    Robert B. Atkinson - Surrounded by loved ones, Robert Boone Atkinson, 91, of Long-meadow, Massachusetts, died peacefully at his home in Long-meadow on June 17, 2012. Born in Hartford, Connecticut to George and Ruth Temple Atkinson, Bob was a longtime resident of Longmeadow and a proud member of the Greater Springfield business community and region. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Bob is survived by his beloved wife of seventy years, Lucy B. Atkinson, and loving daughters, Lucy "Robin" Patterson, and Sarah "Sally" Harrelson and husband, Thomas, of Longmeadow. He leaves six adoring grandchildren, Elizabeth (Patterson) Markham and husband, Brian, of Fairfield, CT, Whitney (Harrelson) Ortiz and husband, Orlando, of Washington, DC, Robert C. Patterson and fiance, Elizabeth, of New York, NY, John K. Harrelson of Cambridge, MA, Jeffrey R. Harrelson of South Boston, MA, and David R. Patterson who predeceased him. He also leaves five great-grandchildren, Quinn, Madeleine and Charlotte Markham, and Eliana and Emilia Ortiz. A mentor to many and admired by more, Bob graduated from The Loomis Chaffee School in 1938, where he developed a love for travel through his participation in a study-abroad program to Europe. He continued his studies at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, and upon graduation in 1943 served in the Army Intelligence Service during World War II. After the war, Bob attended Harvard Law School where he received his LL.B. in 1948. His eminent legal career began the same year when he joined the Springfield, Massachusetts-based law firm of Mallary and Gilbert. The firm eventually merged to become Bulkley, Richardson and Gelinas, LLP, with which he continued as a loyal Partner until his passing. A champion of the community and its causes, Bob was dedicated to numerous organizations throughout Western Massachusetts. He held several prominent positions within the community: a director of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company; a trustee, Chairman and first President of the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts; a director and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Eastern States Exposition; a director and first President of the Western Massachusetts Health Planning Council, Inc.; President of Wesson Memorial Hospital which joined Baystate Medical Center; a director and President of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce; a trustee and director of Hampden Savings Bank; a director of the Executive Committee of Springfield Central Business District, Inc.; a director of the Economic Development Council of Western Massachusetts; and a member of the Board of Assessors of Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Bob received several accolades throughout his accomplished career, including the Distinguished Service Award from the National Pedigreed Livestock Council, and the Special Achievement Award from the American Morgan Horse Association. Bob was viewed by his loved ones as the compleat man, always sparring with humor and inspiring with ideas. An avid skier and golfer, he was active in both sports into his nineties and cherished his time outdoors with close friends and family. Bob was a kind, caring and genuine individual whose love and integrity touched the lives of so many; the magnitude of his personality and the quality of his character will forever affect those who knew him. The family is grateful for the exceptional care that Bob received from The Helen Murphy Angels and Baystate VNA and Hospice.
