Schirado-Filibeck Genealogy

Family of John Filibeck I (4) & Magdalena Kaslek

9. John Filibeck II. Born on 15 Oct 1863 in Wetschehausen, Banat. John died in Glen Ullin, Morton Co., ND, on 14 Jun 1901; he was 37. Buried in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Glen Ullin. Occupation: Farmer, blacksmith.

Wetschehausen, variously spelled Westhausen or Wetschehas, in Hungarian Vecseháa or Vetchaus, and now officially named Petroasa Mare, is in the eastern part of Banat, currently in Romania, about 5 miles southwest of Lugoj, and about 30 miles east of Timisoara.

Helen's notes say they arrived in the United States in May,1895. Filibeck's came from Vetchaus, Austria, now in Romania. Also spelled Wetchahaus.
Also mentions Lugoz-Boughttiebets to come to USA. This may be a ship name.
Filibecks first went to Richardson to friends (Youngheim?). Landed in Boston on Bremen ship. Grandpa Filibeck walked to Haymarsh to find work. Given a horse and wagon by Sam Nagle. Brought family back to Haymarsh to live in a house by Peter Brown. He was a blacksmith by trade. Had a good living in old county.

      AUNT JULIE FILIBECK 'S NARRATIVE
Imigrated to the United States on the ship Dutcher Loyd Bremen in 1896, landing in Boston. Arrived in Richardton, ND, in May and were met by friends they knew in their native country -- Wetchahaus, Austria-Hungary. The friends were Dominic Phillips. Mother and the five children stayed with the Phillip's, living in a barn for three weeks while Father went out to look for a home and work. He went by foot and found a place in the Haymarsh community. He got a job on Simon Nagel's farm and an old house he could move his family into at the Brown farm. Mother and the children helped work with whatever they could to help pay for the use of the house until they took up their homestead. Father helped with the farm work and did all the blacksmith work for the whole valley.
Father was a blacksmith by trade. He learned this trade while he was in the military service in Austria Hungary. He could speak six languages which he also learned while in the service. He also learned English which he could speak very well at his death.
They took their homestead about three miles northwest of Glen Ullin. It is the land that has the Meissner Dam on it, which they bought later after his death. They built a sod house and barn and other shelter buildings. They had a coal mine. Father uncovered and hauled coal to Glen Ullin. There was also sandstone which he hauled to town for the basement of Sacred Heart Church. Father and Stanislaus Wetztein built the foundation and basement fo the church.
The three youngest children - Christina, Anna and Julianna were born on the farm. Anna died in infancy.
In 1901, Father took sick with Pneumonia. Was in the hot summer and he drank extremely cold water. There were no doctors. He took sick on Thursday and on Saturday, June 14, 1901 he died. He is buried on the hill in the parish cemetary in Glen Ullin. He is the first one buried on the south end in the second row. Mother was buried there twenty years later. Father was 37 when he died.
Mother stayed on the farm until 1902. She had a house built on some lots in Glen Ullin and moved to town. She worked hard doing any kind of work. She did housework, nursing, midwife with the doctor and washed and dressed corpses. The latter was done mostly as charity to help friends.
The children stayed with her and helped her until each married. Mother was sick many years and died December 18, 1921, aged 52.

Glen Ullin Yesteryears 1883-1983
Immigrated in May, 1896 landing in Boston. Ship was Deutcher Loyd of the Bremen Ship Company. Came to Richardson, ND by train. They were met by the Dominic Philip family. Already had five children when they arrived.
