15 Oct 1654/5 Simon married
Alice Young, daughter of
John Young &
Alice (-27 May 1647), in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.
161 Born ca 1640 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Alice died in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts on 5 Oct 1708. Buried in Springfield Cemetery.
It’s not clear that Alice Young was the daughter of the Alice (Alis, or Achsah) Young, who was murdered as a witch, or that her father’s name was John.
From Carol F. Karlsen’s book, The Devil in the Shape of a Woman, page 19:
“The first trial and execution for witchcraft was recorded almost simultaneously in two private journals, that of John Winthrop and that of Matthew Grant, the town clerk of Windsor, Connecticut. Both entries were brief. ‘One --- of Windsor arraigned and executed at Hartford for a witch,’ Winthrop noted in late May of 1647. Grant’s entry was both more and less specific: ‘May 26. 47 Alse Young was hanged.’ Little is known about this woman except that she was probably the wife of John Young, who bought a small parcel of land in Windsor in 1641, sole it in 1649, and then disappeared from the town records, and the mother of Alice Young Beamon, who would be accused of witchcraft in nearby Springfield, Massachusetts, some thirty years later. No evidence of the charges against the first Alice Young has survived. As with so many women who would subsequently be convicted of witchcraft in New England, we know of her existence only through her reputation as a witch.”
