2747. Robert Jones. Born ca 1596 in Caversham, Oxfordshire. Robert died in Hingham, MA on 17 Nov 1691.45 Occupation: planter (farmer).

From Lincoln’s History of Hingham:45
    Robert, one of the early planters of Hingham was the ancestor of nearly all the families who have borne the surname Jones in this town [Hingham]. ... Resided at Hingham Centre, ‘over the river.’
    In his will, dated at Hing. 20 Apr. 1688, he gives various small sums in shillings and pence ‘to sons Joseph, John, and Benjamin the elder; also to daughters Sarah Belknap, and Jane Collyer (Collier), and to my grand children which are the children of my son Robert Jones, deceased; all of which sums of money are to be paid them at my now dwelling-house in Hingham.   To my wife Elizabeth all my whole estate of houses, lands, and orchards, and all my meadows and shares in the commons and commonage which I possess either by gift or purchase or exchange; . . . and because my estate is but small I do hereby give my said wife full power to sell some of the said land to supply her immediate necessities,’ etc.   He also bequeaths ‘to my son Benjamin Jones the younger, which the said Elizabeth my wife bear unto me, all my said estate after the death of his mother.’   Witnesses, James Hawke, Theophilus Cushing, Daniel Cushing.   ‘Farmer;’ or, as he calls himself in his will, ‘planter.’

    “Robert Jones came from the vicinity of Reading, Berkshire, England, about 1636 to Hingham, Massachusetts, bringing with him his wife and four children (Melvin E. Jones, Jones, Hathaway-Richard-Gooding Genealogy [Boston, 1834],3). He died at Hingham between 20 April 1688, when he made his will, and 27 January 1691/2 when it was proved (Solfolk Co. Parobate File 1909). In his will, Robert Jones of Hingham, planter, named his sons Joseph, John, and Benjamin, daughters Sarah Belknap and [stepdaughter] Jane Collier, and children of his deceased son Robert. He left all housing, estate, and lands, to his wife Elizabeth, and ‘to Benjamin Jones the younger whom my wife Elizabeth bore to me.’ Witnesses were James Hawke, Theophilus Cushing, and Daniel Cushing, Sr. When the will was proved 27 January 1691/2, it was stated that Elizabeth, the executrix, was unable to come to court but desired that the will be presented for probate.”
On 30 Apr 1621 Robert first married Margaret Garnford in Caversham, Oxfordshire.50 Born ca 1602.
