To John is due the establishment of what is believed to be the first absolutely free public school in America, which he ‘erected and kept’ at Plymouth in 1691, ‘for the education of children and youth.’66
Ca 1680 John first married Phebe Shaw, daughter of Dea. Jonathan Shaw (ca 1631-30 Jul 1701) & Phebe Watson (ca 1636-).66 Born ca Feb 1658. Phebe died in Plymouth, MA on 11 Jun 1686.63

Mary married Nathaniel Bosworth, son of Dea. Nathaniel Bosworth (4 Sep 1617-13 Aug 1690) & Bridget Bellamy. Born ca 1649. Nathaniel was baptized on 29 Jul 1649.109 Nathaniel died in Hull, MA in Aug 1693.

Nathaniel spent his entire life in Hull. In August 1693 tragedy struck, some illness taking his own life and those of four of his children, Nathaniel, Elizabeth, John, and Samuel, within a three week period.109
