Josiah was born Josiah Stover, but his name changed to Stafford. On 11 Apr 1699 Josiah and Sarah were before the Bristol Court for fornification before marriage, but the child not yet being born, the case was continued. In the case, she is described as ‘Sarah Lake, now the wife of Josiah Stafford.’

Will abstract. Dated 6 Jan 1742, mentions wife Sarah, eldest son Joseph Stafford, Joseph’s eight sisters, my daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, Bethiah, Bathsheba, Phebe, Priscill, Hannah, and Patience, son David Stafford, son Abraham Stafford, daughter Priscilla Lowden.263
