John Otis, also spelled Oates, moved to Bristol, Lincoln Co., Maine.

William A. Otis, in his Memoir of the Otis Family,168 concludes that John was of the Dover branch of the Otis family, either the son of Stephen or Richard Otis, but the evidence more strongly suggests Stephen.
