    James Whitcomb owned land in Hardwick, Mass., and seems to have resided there awhile. About 1743 he removed from Rochester, Mass., to Western (later called Warren) where his death occurred sometime between August 30 and November 16, 1763. He was married four times, three of his wives being cousins. The fourth wife was still living February 28, 1771, when her dower was assigned.
On 15 Aug 1721 when James was 23, he first married Mercy Winslow (30180) , daughter of Dea. Samuel Winslow (13020) (ca 1674-18 Jun 1750) & Mercy King (17138) (Nov 1678-16 Feb 1732/3), in Rochester, MA. Born on 16 Aug 1705 in Rochester, MA. Mercy died in Rochester, MA, on 20 Sep 1726; she was 21.
On 12 Jul 1727 when James was 29, he second married Joanna Spooner (43638) , daughter of William Spooner (ca 1660-aft 27 Oct 1735) & Alice Blackwell (23867) (8 May 1681-), in Dartmouth, MA. Born on 12 May 1703 in Dartmouth, MA. Joanna died ca 1728.
