    “Mr. Joshua Bates of Beechwood St., Cohasset, when about eight years old, saw Mr. Israel Whitcomb of Scituate at his father's house. He told me of this about 1815 when he was ninety-four or ninety-five years old. He said that Mr. Whitcomb was a short old man with very white and grey hair hanging in curls about his neck; that he came to their barn to swindle flax; that he jumped over the fence as spry as a cat.” (From notes of Samuel Whitcomb, Jr.)
