    Samuel served in the War of the Revolution, marched on the Lexington alarm, April 19, 1775, in Capt. Timothy Walker’s Co., in Colonel Green’s regiment; also served with rank of Corporal in Capt. Wm. Bird’s Co., in Col. Webb’s regiment of three months’ service, from August 17, 1781. He moved to Concord, N.H., during the war, and was first taxed in the town rate 1778. He operated a ferry across the Merrimac, and lived in the house now [1896] standing, known as Butters’ Inn. The first meeting on Feb. 3, 1795, was held in his house for the organization of the company that built the first bridge over the Merrimac river, between Butters’ Ferry and Concord south line. He was also agent for the Boston and Concord Boating Company.
