From the Rathbone Genealogy:389
“Valentine Rathbone left Rhode Isand and settled at Pittsfield in 1769, and became the minister of the Baptist Church which he founded in 1772. He carried on the clothing business in Pittsfield. On Feb. 12, 1770, Henry Van Schaak sold to Valentine Rathbone lands. Deed dated Jun 10, 1791, witness Ruth Longworthy. In 1779 he was teaching elder of the Shakers at Pittsfield, Mass. He deeded lands to Joseph Dart in 1800; Reuben Rathbone, witness. Valentine, then of Pittsfield, Mass., deeded to Rufus Coggeswell of Richmond, dated Nov. 5, 1801, book 40, page 12. He built clothier works in Pittsfield, 1769. Elder Valentine Rathbone the pastor of the Baptist church organized in 1772, was no less ardent in his patriotism, than his congregational brothers. A clothier by trade he had without abandoning that pursuit and without the advantages of a classical education founded the church to which he ministered from proselytes made by his own preaching in his own house. The results of his speaking indicate that its style was effective. The temperament of the man suggest that it was fiery and vehement and nervous. His fellow citizens manifested esteem for his character and his talents by electing him to represent them in county congress over which he often presided and at interesting crises to the general court.”

Valentine was a Baptist minister filling various pastorates, the last being at Marcellus, NY. His will was proved 10 Apr 1813 (Onondaga Co. Surr. Rec.) He willed his farm, his Susquehanna lands and all his personal property to his son, Saxton, who was to support him and Tabitha until their deaths. Token bequests of $1 each were made to his other surviving children, and the heirs of those who had died.
On 1 Aug 1744 when Valentine Wightman was 19, he married Tabitha Brown (51002) , daughter of Humphrey Brown (34256) (16 Sep 1701-ca 1749) & Tabitha Holdridge (33808) (27 Apr 1703-ca 1759), in Stonington, CT. Married by Rev Joseph Fish. Born on 23 Nov 1727 in Stonington, CT.591 Tabitha died in Marcellus, Onondaga County, New York ca 1810.

John was the first Baptist minister in Stonington in 1775.

From The Rathbone Genealogy:
“In 1807 he with his brother Daniel, who then lived at Rock City, now Milton, Saratoga Co., N. Y., made a journey through the then wilderness to Bloomfield, in Genesee Co., N. Y., and thence to their brother Rev. Valentine Rathbone at Marcellus, N. Y., where they arrived at the moment that Valentine's son Reuben was brought into the house dead. Reuben had that day been to his fallow where he was having the timber burned in order to prepare the land for crops, while thus engaged a burning tree fell upon him, crushing in his skull, killing him almost instantly.
“Rev. John and Daniel remained there several days, comforting the bereaved parents. Rev. John preached the funeral sermon. They on this journey visited their sister Martha Stevens, at Canisteo, N. Y. Rev. John preached his farewell sermon to his Ashford church in Connecticut from Phillipians, first chapter and 27th verse: "Only let your conversation be as it becometh the Gospel of Christ that whither I am and see you or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.”

50485. Dea. Daniel Rathbone. Born on 27 Feb 1731 in Richmond, MA.389 Daniel died in Milton, Saratoga County, New York, on 17 Jan 1823; he was 91.

From the Rathbone Genealogy:389
This history was learned mainly in 1877 from Mrs. Abigail Beecher, the survivor of the 13 children and who died in 1879: aged almost 100 years, and in part from memorandum letters and papers left by Solomon Rathbone, one of the deceased sons, and in part from other authentic sources. This brief history of Daniel Rathbone was prepared by Hon. George W. Rathbone, son of Solomon, the son of Daniel.
Daniel was in the clothing business in Sheffield, Prov. of Massachusetts Bay, also at Great Barrington, Mass. in 1760, where he carried on the cloth dressing business; his works were on the Greene river, about one mile west of the village. In 1760 he was also engaged in clothier business at Stonington, Conn. Was moderator at town meeting of Great Barrington, March 30, 1766. He resided at Richmond, Berkshire Co., Mass., until all his children were grown up except Mercy Lois, who died in infancy, and then moved to Milton (Wilton?) or Rock City, as it is usually called in Saratoga Co., N.Y., where his two sons Daniel and Valentine had preceded him and from that time forward he and his wife lived with their son Valentine and were not very kindly cared for by him. This removal was somewhere not far from the year 1804. From his letters and other writings which have been preserved it appears he had a fair education for those days and was a man of considerable influence. He was a deacon in the Baptist church, an occasional preacher, but only to fill vacancies. He was never settled over a congregation. It appears also that he was a thrifty man, having money and lands which he disposed of in his old age in the way of loans and gifts, among his children. The only weak point so far as is known in his history is the fact that about 1780 he was carried away by the Shaker delusion, joined the Shaker community, seven miles distant from him, at New Lebanon, N.Y., at the head of which was Ann Lee, or Mother Anne, as she was called, the founder of the sect. He did not, however, remove from his farm, and three years later, having discovered his mistake and become disgusted with the society, he with his family withdrew from it, and he published a full account of their delusion. He and his wife both died at Milton at advanced ages...and their graves are marked by properly carved headstones. A number of their children and grandchildren also died at Milton and lie buried near them.
On 4 May 1758 when Daniel was 27, he married Sarah Higbee (51108) , daughter of John Higbee (16 Jul 1707-5 Dec 1790) & Sarah Candee (33906) (28 Sep 1710-6 May 1792), in Middletown, CT. Born 24 Mar 1738/9 in Middletown, CT. Sarah died in Milton, Saratoga County, New York on 5 Aug 1835.
